TSC RFID printers: which range for which shop

TSC lists ten printer ranges on its RFID page. Six of them are candidates for a fashion shop at all, and two of those six carry a question mark. This page sorts that out, gives a source for every price, and names the one gap every TSC datasheet shares.

Context

What an RFID printer does in a shop

An RFID printer prints the label and encodes the chip inside it in the same pass. It is the machine you use to tag your existing stock and every new collection. Without it there is nothing to read — a handheld only finds what was written once.

The sequence in a shop is always the same, and it is shorter than most people expect. You scan the barcode already on the garment with the handheld. The printer then issues the small RFID label: the barcode is printed on it, the chip is written with a number of its own in the same pass, and the link between the two is stored in the software at that same moment. That is the step we call marrying — printing, encoding and linking are one operation, not a second pass. From then on the piece is findable by every RFID reader in the shop, without anyone having to hunt for a barcode and line it up.

If you do not work with barcodes at all today, you do not have to introduce a numbering system first: the app generates the barcodes and your article list is extended with them by CSV. After that the process is identical. What ends up in the chip is a HANGCOUNT number of its own; the link to the barcode lives in the database, not on the label.

That also explains why the printer plays a different role in the purchase than the reader. You use the handheld once or twice a week; you use the printer every time goods come in. It sits in the stockroom or the office, not on the shop floor, and above all it has to be dependable at small volumes. A machine that manages 10,000 labels a day is of no use to a shop tagging 300 pieces a week — it only costs more.

How many labels you actually need is quick to work out. For 4,000 existing pieces that is 4,000 labels to get started, then as many as you buy pieces. The printer is never the bottleneck in that. The bottleneck is the hand attaching the label to the garment: in our experience one person manages 200 to 300 pieces an hour, so a desktop printer running at eight labels a second delivers a multiple of what can be processed beside it.

First cut

UHF or HF: half the ranges drop out at once

Garment labels need UHF RFID on 865 to 868 MHz. TSC also sells HF RFID at 13.56 MHz — the technology inside an access card, with a range of a few centimetres. Buy an HF machine by mistake and you cannot take stock with it.

The difference is not a detail; it is the difference between two applications. HF works at 13.56 megahertz and reads over a few centimetres — fine for a card held against a reader. UHF works in Europe on 865 to 868 megahertz and reads over several metres, and only that lets you capture a rail of garments as you walk past it.

At TSC the dividing line runs straight through the desktop range:

The 4-inch DH series is direct thermal only and carries no RFID model in any source we checked. One automated reading of the same manufacturer page returned an RFID text block — TSC presents TH and DH on shared pages, and no dealer and no datasheet confirms a model called DH240R or DH340R. We treat that as a content bleed on the manufacturer's page, not as a product.

A second point concerns the printing method. Direct thermal means the paper itself is heat-sensitive; such labels fade in a shop window and under halogen light. For swing tickets in fashion retail, thermal transfer is the right choice — a ribbon carries the ink onto the label, and that lasts for years. Every machine in the table above that is a candidate for garments can do thermal transfer; the exception is the mobile Alpha-40L, which prints direct thermal only.

ips means inches per second, the usual measure of print speed; 8 ips is about 203 millimetres per second. Prices net, as at 03.09.2026. Jarltech does not state its tax basis; tsc-drucker.com prints “plus VAT” beneath its figures. All prices here are net, excluding VAT, and business buyers in another EU country with a valid VAT identification number are invoiced under the reverse-charge procedure. Three figures recur on almost all of these machines, and they are why the choice matters less than the price spread suggests. The minimum label pitch is 0.625 inches throughout, that is 15.9 millimetres — none of them can reliably encode shorter labels. All of them do “Encode During Print”, writing the chip as the label prints. And all of them calibrate automatically, feeding three to four labels to find where the chip sits. What the higher price buys is speed, housing and roll capacity — not a better RFID function.

Choosing

Which machine for which shop

One site, a few hundred pieces a month: TH240R. Several hundred at a stretch, or a dusty corner of the stockroom: MB241T. Goods tagged at the carton in receiving: Alpha-40L. Anything beyond that is industrial equipment for volumes a shop does not have.

The normal case: TH240R. A 2.8-kilogram desktop machine that fits beside the computer, with a colour display, Ethernet and USB. 203 dpi is enough for barcodes and price marking; if a fine logo or very small type has to go on a narrow swing ticket, take the TH340R at 300 dpi. One thing matters on this range: TSC supplies the built-in RFID module as a factory option only. A plain TH240 cannot be upgraded internally later — the R belongs in the order.

The sturdier alternative: MB241T. An industrial machine with a metal cover and a die-cast mechanism, 9.1 kilograms, markedly faster at 12 inches per second and taking eight-inch label rolls. The surprising part is the price: tsc-drucker.com lists the MB241T at 802.50 euro net, below the desktop unit. The catch sits in the same paragraph — no surcharge for the RFID option is stated there. A quotation that names the RFID build explicitly is mandatory here, or a machine without the module arrives.

For goods receiving: Alpha-40L. A battery-powered machine of 985 grams that hangs at the pallet instead of standing on a desk. IP54, a 1.8-metre drop rating without a case, Bluetooth and optional Wi-Fi. Two limits come with it: it prints direct thermal only, so its labels fade in the light, and it takes rolls up to 67 millimetres in diameter — for RFID media TSC recommends no more than 62. Those are small rolls, changed correspondingly often.

When more is worth it. The T6000e is built for continuous work: 14 inches per second, 450 metres of ribbon, optionally a built-in barcode verifier that checks every printed label and reprints failures automatically. That makes sense when a supplier specification demands verification, or when printing runs for hours daily. For a shop tagging one delivery a month it is a machine that stands idle most of the time.

An honest note on the order of purchase: the printer is not what an RFID rollout founders on. It founders on tagging the existing stock, and that is manual work. If you are unsure whether RFID suits your shop, start with an inexpensive reader and a small batch of pre-encoded labels rather than investing in a printer first.

European dealer prices exist for the TH series, the MB241 series, the T6000e and the Alpha-40L. For the RFID versions of the T4000 the dealer we checked names no price but asks for an enquiry. For the T800 series we found no European price at all. All figures as at 03.09.2026.

Dealer prices are snapshots; project prices are frequently lower. Availability and configuration are to be settled with the dealer. HANGCOUNT does not sell these machines at the dealer prices named. Where the table says the tax basis is not stated, the dealer's own page does not say whether the figure includes VAT; we do not convert such amounts, because a figure we calculated ourselves is not a source.

Two prices not to take at face value

The first is the MB241T at 802.50 euro net. It undercuts the TH240R although it is the sturdier and faster machine — which is not an error in the listing but a consequence of the dealer listing a unit without an RFID module. TSC offers RFID for this range as a factory option and as a retrofit kit, but none of the dealers we checked prices it. So do not budget 802.50 euro for an RFID-capable MB241T; get a quotation in which the RFID build appears as a line of its own.

The second is the discounted 1,364.25 euro for the TH340R at a Spanish dealer. A machine listed at 25 per cent off says little about the price you will be quoted in your own country. We carry it because it is the only figure we found where net and gross are both stated — it shows the order of magnitude, not your quotation.

The open frequency question

None of the model-specific TSC datasheets we checked states a European frequency band. Dealers quote “Global 865 to 928 MHz” for several ranges. That spans 865 to 868 MHz but pins it to no particular device — and in Europe that is the band you are allowed to transmit in.

The readers in this section are different. Zebra writes “EU 865–868 MHz” into the DS9908R datasheet explicitly, and for the TC22R even with transmit power in dBm ERP. Chainway names the band for the C72 in the same way. We did not find that for the TSC printers: neither the official T4000 datasheet nor the MB241 datasheet nor the product pages for the TH and T6000e ranges gives a frequency range. What we did find is “Global (865-928 MHz)” on dealer pages for the T800, T4000, MB241T, T6000e and Alpha-40L.

That statement is not wrong; it is simply not what you need. A machine covering 865 to 928 MHz can be sold in Europe and in North America — which band your particular unit uses in its regional build is not settled by it. UHF RFID in Europe is governed by CEPT recommendation ERC/REC 70-03 and the harmonised standard ETSI EN 302 208, and national regulators such as the Bundesnetzagentur in Germany, ARCEP in France, UKE in Poland or RDI in the Netherlands implement it through general authorisations. A device set to the North American band may not be operated under any of them.

What follows is one line in your enquiry, not a verdict against TSC: have the dealer confirm in writing that the machine offered is the European build running 865 to 868 MHz, and have that confirmation put on the order acknowledgement. For machines a European distributor ships with CE marking as a matter of course, the answer is usually straightforward. We simply do not assert it here while it is absent from the datasheet.

The same restraint applies to the encoder. Only for the T800 series is it publicly documented which module does the work: Impinj lists the T800 as a partner product built around the E310. For the TH series, MB241, T4000, T6000e and Alpha-40L we found no statement about the reader module fitted. That barely affects daily use — it does affect comparability with other makers.

Lifecycle

Two ranges with a question mark

For the T800 and the T4000 several US dealers report the end of the range and name successors. TSC itself still lists both on its European product pages as current products. We do not resolve that contradiction — we state it, so that you ask before you order.

T800 series. The dealer advanced-automationinc.com marks part number T82R-100-1 as “discontinued” and names TH240R-A001-0001 as the replacement — that is a machine from the TH series. Atlas RFID writes “Product is reaching end-of-life” on its page and no longer quotes a price. At the same time the TSC sites for Europe, North America and Asia all carried the T800 series including its RFID version on 03.09.2026. For the RFID version we found no European dealer price at all.

T4000 series. Atlas RFID notes “Product reaching end-of-life” and recommends the MB241T as the replacement. The European dealer tsc-drucker.com does carry the two RFID part numbers T42R4-200-2 and T43R4-200-2 in its catalogue, but with no price held and marked as not in stock — while the versions without RFID are stocked and priced. The TSC product pages carry no discontinuation notice, and the range does not appear on TSC's own list of discontinued products.

Together that is not a verdict but a clear instruction. If you want to buy either machine, ask the dealer about supply over the next few years, about spare parts and about printhead availability. A printer is something you keep for eight years; a range already treated as end-of-life in two countries is a poor starting point. For a new installation the TH series and the MB241 series are the more obvious choices — both are recent enough that the question does not arise.

On the standing of these sources: what a dealer says about a product's lifecycle is not a manufacturer statement. A dealer can drop a range without the manufacturer discontinuing it. So both positions stand side by side here, and neither is presented as fact about the other.

Running costs

What comes on top of the printer

With a printer the machine price is less often the whole price than with a reader. Budget for the following before you release funds:

  • Labels. RFID labels cost roughly 12 to 15 cents apiece in the small quantities a fashion shop buys. For 4,000 existing pieces that is 480 to 600 euro just to get started, then a running cost for every new collection. Which construction suits which goods is on our RFID labels page.
  • Ribbon. Thermal transfer printing needs a ribbon matched to the label material. The desktop machines take rolls up to 300 metres, the industrial ones up to 450. A small but recurring item.
  • Printhead. A wear part. TSC gives twelve months of warranty on the thermal transfer printhead of the T6000e, or one million linear inches, whichever comes first. For a shop machine printing a few thousand labels a year that is a long way off — the price of a replacement head still belongs in the quotation.
  • Integration. The printer has to receive the numbers it is meant to write. Our software does that; if you use another solution, settle in advance whether it drives the printer directly or needs a layer in between. TSC machines understand their own TSPL language plus emulations for Zebra, Datamax, Sato, Toshiba Tec and Intermec.
  • Label layout. Size, typeface, logo and barcode position have to be set up once. That is half an hour's work, but it happens, and it happens again if you change the label format.
Law

Radio approval and operation in Europe

An RFID printer is a radio device. In Europe the band 865 to 868 MHz is allocated to UHF RFID at up to 2 W ERP, set out in CEPT recommendation ERC/REC 70-03 and in the harmonised standard ETSI EN 302 208. National regulators implement it through general authorisations — the Bundesnetzagentur in Germany, ARCEP in France, UKE in Poland, RDI in the Netherlands, and their counterparts elsewhere. No separate registration of the individual device is required as long as the device conforms. The United Kingdom has been outside the EU framework since it left the Union; there Ofcom's Interface Requirement IR 2030 applies and equipment carries UKCA marking rather than CE.

Two points belong in every purchase all the same. First the regional build: a machine set to the North American band of 902 to 928 MHz may not be operated here — hence the note in the frequency section. Second the buying route: anyone importing from outside the EU becomes the responsible economic operator under Article 4 of Regulation (EU) 2019/1020, with their own address on the device, the duty to hold technical documentation for market surveillance, and liability for radio conformity. National implementations of the WEEE and packaging directives come on top, plus battery rules for a battery-powered machine such as the Alpha-40L. Buying through a European distributor removes all of that.

Incidentally, a printer's transmit power is a different subject from a handheld's. The printer encodes a chip a few centimetres away and needs little power; the handheld reads over metres. The groundwork is on our RFID guide.

Frequently asked questions about TSC RFID printers

Which TSC printers can encode RFID labels for garments?

The ones with UHF RFID: the TH240R and TH340R as desktop units, the MB241 series and the T4000 as industrial models, the T6000e at the top end and the Alpha-40L as a mobile printer. Plus the T800 series, whose future is open. The 4-inch DH series has no RFID at all, and the 2-inch models carry only HF RFID at 13.56 MHz, which cannot encode garment labels.

What does a TSC RFID printer cost in Europe?

The spread is wide. The dealer tsc-drucker.com lists the MB241 series from 727.50 euro net, though without a stated surcharge for the RFID option. Jarltech quotes 1,626.00 euro for the TH240R with built-in UHF RFID, 1,775.00 euro for the Alpha-40L and between 3,535.00 and 5,433.00 euro for the T6000e. For the T800 series we found no European price at all. All figures as at 03.09.2026; Jarltech does not state its tax basis.

Is a desktop printer enough for a fashion shop?

As a rule, yes. The bottleneck when tagging is not the printer but the hand attaching the label. Tagging 4,000 existing pieces runs at roughly 200 to 300 pieces per person per hour in our experience — a desktop unit printing eight labels a second is never the constraint. Industrial machines pay off once printing runs for hours every day.

Why does this page not state a European frequency band?

Because TSC does not publish one in any model-specific datasheet we checked. Dealers quote “Global 865 to 928 MHz” for several ranges — that spans the European and the North American band but pins neither to a given device. In Europe, UHF RFID runs on 865 to 868 MHz. Have the regional build confirmed in writing before you order.

What does “Encode During Print” mean?

The printer writes the RFID chip while the label is still printing, rather than in a second pass afterwards. That saves time and makes the machine more tolerant of labels whose inlay is not placed identically every time. TSC lists the feature for the T4000, the MB241 series, the T6000e and the TH series.

Can RFID be retrofitted to a TSC printer?

It depends on the range. On the 4-inch TH series the built-in RFID module is a factory option only; the sole retrofit is an external tear-off or cutter module. For the MB241 series TSC lists RFID both as a factory option and as a dealer-fitted upgrade kit. Settle this before you order — a printer bought without the module cannot be converted.

Do RFID printers need special labels?

Yes. An RFID label carries an antenna and a chip, is thicker than a plain label and costs roughly 12 to 15 cents apiece in the small quantities a fashion shop buys. The printer also has to know where in the label the chip sits; every machine named here has an automatic calibration that feeds a few labels and works the position out for itself.

Is 203 dpi enough, or do I need 300 dpi?

For barcodes and ordinary price marking, 203 dpi is enough. 300 dpi pays off when small type, a fine logo or a very compact code has to fit a narrow swing ticket. The surcharge runs roughly 100 to 350 euro depending on the range, and print speed drops: on the TH240R from eight to six inches per second.
