RFID printers compared.

Four manufacturers, three classes of machine, one job: print the hang tag and write the chip inside it in the same pass. This page sets the RFID label printers from Zebra, TSC, Honeywell and SATO side by side — with net prices and a source for each, with the smallest label pitch each manufacturer actually documents, and with a straight answer on whether RFID can be retrofitted. We name no overall winner. We name four situations and the machine that fits each one.

Orientation

Three classes, not one field

Short answer

Treating RFID printers as one market misleads. There are desktop machines of two to three kilograms for the shop, industrial machines of ten to twenty kilograms for central labelling, and mobile machines under a kilogram for goods-in. They differ in throughput, housing and media capacity, not in radio performance. For a single fashion shop the desktop class is the answer; the other two solve a problem it does not have.

All four manufacturers serve all three classes, which is what makes the comparison worth making. A SATO CL6NX Plus at 4,489.53 euros net is not better than a Zebra ZD621R at 1,348.10 euros net; it is built for something else. Mixing the classes is comparing a delivery van with a cargo bike.

What each class is built for

  • Desktop. Sits next to the computer in the back office or under the till. Media roll up to around 127 millimetres in diameter, ribbon up to 300 metres. Enough for labelling new stock as it arrives, and for the first pass over an existing shop if you spread it across a few days.
  • Industrial. Metal housing, larger rolls, higher throughput, continuous duty. Worth it when a head office labels for several branches, or when four-figure quantities come through every day.
  • Mobile. Battery, under a kilogram, goes to the pallet. Useful at goods-in — but every model we checked prints direct thermal only, and that print fades. Not a machine to run a shop on.

Desktop printers compared

Short answer

Four desktop machines with UHF RFID face each other: TSC TH240R, Zebra ZD621R, Honeywell PC45d and SATO CT4-LX. Technically they sit close together — 203 or 300 dpi, roughly 104 to 108 millimetres print width, 6 to 8 inches per second. They part company on price, on the documented label pitch, and on whether the machine exists without RFID at all.

* TSC published the label pitch for the TH range late: the TH/DH datasheet dated 23.10.2025 states 15.9 millimetres for the RFID versions, together with RAIN UHF Passive to GS1 EPC Gen2 v2 and ISO 18000-63 — the same values as every other TSC range. Which model column the figure belongs to could not be read cleanly from the text layer of the PDF, so have the dealer confirm it for your part number. TSC price: jarltech.com, part number TH240R-A001-0002, 1,626.00 euros; the page states expressly that prices are in euros and exclusive of VAT. The category page lists twenty further configurations. Zebra price: mediaform.de, item 3006-005, 1,348.10 euros net, or 1,520.60 euros net with wireless LAN. Honeywell price: jarltech.com, part number PC45D00EU00200, net (the page footer states prices are exclusive of VAT). All figures as at 04.09.2026. Buyers registered for VAT in another EU member state normally purchase under the reverse-charge procedure, so the net figure is the one that matters.

What the table does not show

The SATO CT4-LX is the only one of the four whose manufacturer datasheet carries a separate figure for RFID media: the maximum roll diameter falls from 128 to 115 millimetres when RFID labels are used. That reads like a footnote, but it is a sign that the machine was laid out for RFID rolls rather than simply fitted with a module.

The Honeywell PC45 carries an open question we cannot settle. Jarltech lists part number PC45D00EU00200 as a regular European item, while a US dealer describes exactly the same part number as Latin America only. Both statements stand in the sources. Anyone buying this machine should have the European variant confirmed in writing.

And on the TSC TH240R the rule from its device page applies: RFID is a factory option only. The R belongs in the order, or you end up with a label printer that will never write a chip.

Industrial

Industrial printers compared

Short answer

In this class prices run from roughly 1,526 to 5,813 euros net, and the spread has little to do with RFID performance. It comes from print head width, resolution, throughput and housing. For labelling garments the dearest printer is not the better one; it is the one built for a different job.

* The RFID version of the MB241 range has its own part number: MB241R-A001-0202, listed by aidet.es at 1,755.75 euros net (list 2,341.00 euros). The same dealer carries the version without RFID, MB241T-A001-0202, at 802.50 euros net, so the RFID surcharge is around 950 euros net. The widely quoted 727.50 euros from tsc-drucker.com is the price of the base machine without RFID. The Jarltech figures for the T6000e carry no stated tax basis. ** Two dealers, the same part number, more than a thousand euros apart: the Zebra ZT411 RFID with part number ZT41142-T0E00C0Z is listed by mediaform.de at 2,481.40 euros and by autoid-shop.com at 3,724.00 euros, there explicitly as a recommended list price exclusive of VAT. The bargain that is not one

Price comparisons regularly show the TSC MB241 at 727.50 euros net, which makes it look like by far the cheapest industrial RFID machine — cheaper than any desktop printer. That figure is for the base machine without RFID. The RFID version has its own part number, MB241R-A001-0202, and costs 1,755.75 euros net. The surcharge of around 950 euros is more than half the price of the machine again. Anyone looking for the cheapest route to an industrial RFID printer does not end up at the MB241 but at the Zebra ZT231 RFID at 1,525.90 euros net.

We carried this as an open question on this page for two days, with a note saying the RFID surcharge was not stated anywhere. It is stated now — by a Spanish dealer who lists both part numbers side by side. The range is set out in detail on our MB241 page.

Two ranges you should no longer order

TSC discontinued the T800 and T4000 ranges on 30 June 2026. It says so on TSC's own list of discontinued products, naming the TH240 range and the MB241 range respectively as replacements. For the T800 there is a footnote worth reading: the UHF RFID module and the display module have themselves been discontinued, so TSC can supply no spare parts for those two assemblies — and on an RFID printer that is the assembly that matters. Both product pages remain online unchanged and carry no such notice. Both statements come from TSC; we do not resolve the contradiction, and we suggest having the lifecycle status confirmed in writing before any order.

Mobile

Mobile printers compared

Short answer

Three mobile RFID printers matter in retail: the TSC Alpha-40L, the Zebra ZQ511R and ZQ521R, and the Zebra ZQ630 Plus RFID. All three share one drawback: they print direct thermal only. For a hang tag that stays on the garment for a season that is the wrong print, because it fades under light. As a second machine at goods-in they still earn their place.

What to look at

What actually matters in an RFID printer

Short answer

Four things decide it, and print speed is not among them: the smallest label pitch the machine can handle, whether it prints and encodes in one pass, whether it calibrates itself to a new label stock, and whether it can do thermal transfer. Everything else is equipment.

1. The smallest label pitch

This is the figure that binds first in fashion retail. Hang tags are small, and if the printer needs 25 millimetres between two chips, the tag you want is off the table. TSC states 15.9 millimetres for the MB241, T4000 and T6000e; Zebra states 16 millimetres for the ZD621R, ZT411, ZT421, ZT610 and ZQ630 Plus. SATO gives no fixed figure for the CL4NX Plus but an inlay-dependent range of roughly 21 to 75 millimetres. Honeywell gives only a minimum label length of 50.8 millimetres, and only for the PX45 and PX65.

TSC supplied the figure for the TH range late: the TH/DH datasheet dated 23.10.2025 gives 15.9 millimetres for the RFID versions as well, together with RAIN UHF Passive to GS1 EPC Gen2 v2 and ISO 18000-63 and on-metal labels up to 1.35 millimetres thick in tear-off mode. TSC's own RFID brochure and RFID labeling reference manual still omit the TH range entirely. If you rely on the figure, have it confirmed for your part number.

What follows from that: settle the label before you settle the printer. Have the dealer confirm that this exact inlay encodes reliably on this exact machine, ideally with a sample roll. Which label formats come into question for garments at all is set out on our RFID tags and labels page.

2. Printing and encoding in one pass

All four manufacturers do this, and all four call it something different. TSC writes Encode During Print. Zebra calls it Adaptive Encoding Technology and claims it removes complex rules about chip placement. SATO supplies the counter-check in its own CL4NX Plus inlay guide: for reliable encoding the manufacturer recommends not printing faster than 4 inches per second. That is the most honest statement of the four, because it says out loud that datasheet speed and encoding speed are two different numbers.

3. Automatic calibration

An RFID printer has to know where the chip sits inside the label. TSC calibrates automatically and feeds three to four labels to do it. Zebra solves the same problem through Adaptive Encoding Technology. Without that function you set up every new label stock by hand, which is the difference between five minutes and half an afternoon whenever the material changes.

4. Thermal transfer rather than direct thermal

Direct thermal needs no ribbon and saves on consumables. But the print fades under light and heat, in a shop window within weeks. For hang tags that stay on the garment for a season, thermal transfer is the only sensible route. The desktop machines from Zebra, TSC and SATO do both; the Honeywell PC45 is sold as a direct thermal and as a thermal transfer model; every mobile machine here prints direct thermal only.

What does not decide it: speed

A desktop machine at 8 inches per second prints roughly 20 hang tags a minute. On that basis 4,000 garments are labelled in a little over three hours of machine time. The bottleneck sits elsewhere: we work with 200 to 300 pieces per person per hour for attaching the tags, which is our own figure from experience and not a manufacturer's. For 4,000 garments that is roughly 15 to 20 working hours, and the printer stands idle for most of them. How the whole sequence fits together is explained in our RFID printer guide.

Radio approval

What the datasheets do not say

Short answer

Not one Zebra and not one TSC printer datasheet we checked states a frequency band. With Honeywell only the PX45 and PX65 datasheet gives a figure, 865 to 928 MHz. With SATO the only European figure sits in the CL4NX Plus inlay guide: 865 to 868 MHz to ETSI. So the brochure will not tell you whether a machine is fit for Europe. That hangs on the regional variant, and it has to be confirmed in writing.

This is not carelessness. It is how the manufacturers work: radio approval is handled through the part number and the regional variant, not through the datasheet. It still misleads buyers, because dealers fill the gap with wording of their own. Several shops write Global 865–928 MHz. That is a dealer statement, not a European one.

One case to watch: Honeywell's PX240SR is described in the manufacturer's own datasheet as developed for the Chinese market and works on 920 to 925 MHz. That band is not allocated in Europe. No European price for the machine was findable, and in this case that is a good sign.

Across Europe UHF RFID runs under ETSI EN 302 208 in the band 865 to 868 MHz at up to 2 W ERP, set within CEPT recommendation ERC/REC 70-03, which the member administrations implement nationally — the Bundesnetzagentur in Germany, ARCEP in France, UKE in Poland, RDI in the Netherlands. In most member states this takes the form of a general authorisation: no licence application and no device registration, provided the equipment meets the standard, carries CE marking and comes with an EU declaration of conformity. The United Kingdom has sat outside this framework since leaving the European Union; there Ofcom interface requirement IR 2030 and UKCA marking apply.

What to do about it: before ordering, ask for written confirmation that the part number offered is the European variant, and ask for the EU declaration of conformity. If you import from outside the European Union yourself, Article 4 of Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 makes you the responsible economic operator, with the national registration duties for electrical equipment, batteries and packaging that go with it.

Prices

Why the same part number carries two prices

Short answer

For two machines on this page, two dealers quote figures for the same part number that sit more than a thousand euros apart. That is not a research error but the state of the market: list price, promotional price and project price stand side by side, and not every shop states whether a figure is net or gross. We give both figures with their source rather than picking one.

The two contradictions

  • Zebra ZT411 RFID, part number ZT41142-T0E00C0Z. mediaform.de quotes 2,481.40 euros next to a struck-through list price of 2,952.87 euros; autoid-shop.com quotes 3,724.00 euros and describes it expressly as the recommended list price exclusive of VAT. The gap is around 1,240 euros.
  • Honeywell PX45, part number PX45A00EU0000200. jarltech.com quotes 5,813.33 euros net, itgstore.eu 4,080.04 euros plus VAT. The gap is around 1,730 euros, and the cause cannot be established from outside.

The second trap: the tax basis

Not every shop says whether a figure includes VAT. For the Honeywell PC45d, jarltech.com quotes 1,731.81 euros and states in its footer that prices are exclusive of VAT; another supplier lists the same part number from 1,057.65 euros including VAT. Those are not merely two prices, they are two different bases. Where a source does not state the basis, this page says so and does not convert the figure.

And the third: the anchor price

The SATO prices at ico.de all appear as a 35 per cent reduction from a stated list price. An anchor like that says little about the market price, so we carry the figure actually charged rather than the list price.

US dollar figures are never converted into euros on this page. A converted dollar price suggests a comparability that duty, import VAT, regional variant and warranty terms do not support. Every figure here is one dealer's price on one day, checked on 04.09.2026 — not a market price and not an offer from us. Buyers registered for VAT in another EU member state normally purchase under the reverse-charge procedure.

Retrofitting

Factory option or retrofit kit

Short answer

Whether RFID can be added later depends on the model, not on the manufacturer. The industrial machines from Zebra and Honeywell have documented kits; the desktop machines generally do not. For a shop the consequence is simple: order the desktop machine in the RFID version from the start. In this class, changing your mind later means buying a new printer.

Two of the four manufacturers name the encoder module. Zebra names the RE40, documented for the ZD621R, ZD611R and ZT231. For TSC, Impinj lists the Impinj E310 on its own partner page for the T800, T4000, T6000e, Alpha-40L and the PEX-2000 print engine range — for the TH range and the MB241 range not even Impinj names a module. Neither Honeywell nor SATO names a module in any document we checked.

Recommendation

Four situations, four recommendations

Short answer

There is no best RFID printer, because in the class that matters to retail the four manufacturers sit close together. What decides it is the situation: a single shop, a head office labelling for several branches, an industrial printer already on site, or labelling at goods-in. Each of those four calls for a different machine.

One shop, labelling as stock arrives

A desktop machine with thermal transfer. The lowest price with a stated tax basis is the Zebra ZD621R at 1,348.10 euros net, with a documented label pitch of 16 millimetres. The TSC TH240R is its functional equal, but its label pitch is not documented and the dealer price carries no stated tax basis.

A head office labelling for several branches

The industrial class, and here the Zebra ZT231 RFID at 1,525.90 euros net is the cheapest documented way in, with a field kit on record. The TSC MB241R sits above it at 1,755.75 euros net, not below: the often-quoted 727.50 euros is the machine without RFID.

An industrial printer is already on site

Check retrofitting before you buy. Zebra quotes five minutes for the ZT610 and ZT620; for the PM45 and PM65 the Honeywell kit 50180233-001 costs around 643.50 euros net. Either is a fraction of a new machine.

Labelling at goods-in

Mobile, but only as a second machine. TSC Alpha-40L from 1,775.00 euros or the Zebra ZQ521R at 2,020.00 euros net. Both print direct thermal only, so a hang tag meant to last a season still needs a thermal transfer machine.

When the manufacturer matters more than the price

In two cases the figure should not decide. First, when label software, templates or a service contract for one brand already exist in the business — switching then costs more than the price difference. Second, when your label supplier already stocks a qualified inlay for a particular machine. Either outweighs two hundred euros on the purchase price.

What this page deliberately does not do

It crowns no winner and awards no scores, because the basis for that is missing. We did not run these machines side by side in continuous duty. We read the published documents of the four manufacturers and the listings of European dealers and checked them against each other. Where a figure is missing, it says so here, and it is not filled in from another range. Common questions about RFID printers

Which RFID printer is best for a fashion shop?

For a single shop a desktop printer with thermal transfer is the right class; anything above it is built for a volume you do not have. Within that class, the lowest price we could document with a stated tax basis is the Zebra ZD621R at 1,348.10 euros net from mediaform.de. The TSC TH240R is listed by Jarltech at 1,626.00 euros net, and a Spanish dealer carries the same part number at 1,219.50 euros net; the Honeywell PC45d at 1,731.81 euros net from Jarltech; the SATO CT4-LX in the configuration we checked at 2,117.51 euros net from ico.de. There is no overall winner: if you already run label software or a service contract for one brand, that weighs more than a hundred euros of difference.

What does an RFID label printer cost?

Desktop machines with RFID sit between roughly 1,350 and 2,120 euros net, industrial machines between roughly 1,526 euros for the Zebra ZT231 and 5,813.33 euros for the Honeywell PX45. Be careful with very low figures: the TSC MB241 is often quoted at 727.50 euros net, but that is the price without RFID. The RFID version, the MB241R, costs 1,755.75 euros net. So always check whether the part number in an offer carries an R. Every figure is one dealer's price on one day, not a market price.

Do I need 203 or 300 dpi?

203 dpi is enough for hang tags. At that resolution the description, the size, the price and a barcode all come out cleanly. 300 dpi earns its keep when very small type, care symbols or two-dimensional codes have to fit on a narrow tag. The surcharge on the machines we checked runs between roughly 70 and 350 euros, and the higher resolution costs speed: the Zebra ZD621R prints at 8 inches per second at 203 dpi and 6 at 300 dpi.

Can an existing label printer be retrofitted with RFID?

Sometimes, and it depends on the model rather than the manufacturer. Zebra describes a five minute field conversion for the ZT610 and ZT620 and a field-installable kit for the ZT231 and ZT411. Honeywell has a retrofit kit for the PM45 and PM65, part number 50180233-001, listed at 643.50 euros net by antegis.de; for the PX45 and PX65 the configuration guide states plainly that RFID must be ordered from the factory and is not field installable. TSC retrofits the MB241 range either at the factory or through a dealer kit - the factory version is called the MB241R and costs around 950 euros net more than the machine without RFID - while on the TH240R desktop machine RFID is a factory option only. For the Zebra ZD621R and ZD611R desktop machines no retrofit kit appears in the documents we checked.

How small can an RFID hang tag be?

The minimum label pitch is the figure that binds first in fashion retail, and it is not stated everywhere. TSC gives 15.9 millimetres for the MB241, T4000 and T6000e; Zebra gives 16 millimetres for the ZD621R, ZT411, ZT421, ZT610 and ZQ630 Plus. SATO gives no single figure in its CL4NX Plus inlay guide but a separation of roughly 21 to 75 millimetres depending on the inlay. Honeywell states only a minimum label length of 50.8 millimetres, and only for the PX45 and PX65. For the TSC TH range the figure only appeared with the datasheet dated October 2025, also at 15.9 millimetres. Settle this with the specific inlay you intend to use before you buy the printer.

Why does no datasheet state the European frequency band?

Because the manufacturers handle radio approval through the regional variant of the part number, not through the datasheet. Of the documents we checked, not one Zebra and not one TSC printer datasheet gives a frequency figure at all. With Zebra a number appears only in the datasheet for the RE40 module: 865 to 928 MHz for worldwide use. With Honeywell only the PX45 and PX65 datasheet gives a figure, 865 to 928 MHz, while the matching configuration guide says 869 MHz for Europe. With SATO the only European figure sits in the CL4NX Plus inlay guide: 865 to 868 MHz to ETSI. The practical consequence: ask for written confirmation that the part number offered is the European variant, and ask for the EU declaration of conformity.

Thermal transfer or direct thermal for hang tags?

Thermal transfer. Direct thermal needs no ribbon and is cheaper to run, but the print fades under light and heat - in a shop window within weeks. For a tag that stays on the garment for a season that is the wrong choice. It matters most with the mobile machines: the TSC Alpha-40L and the Zebra ZQ511R and ZQ521R print direct thermal only. As a second machine at goods-in that is fine; as the only printer in the shop it is not.

How fast does an RFID printer need to be?

Slower than the datasheets suggest. A desktop machine at 8 inches per second prints roughly 20 hang tags a minute, so 4,000 garments take a little over three hours of machine time. The bottleneck is never the printer but the hand at the garment: we work with 200 to 300 pieces per person per hour, which is our own figure from experience and not a manufacturer's. SATO goes further and recommends in its own inlay guide not to print faster than 4 inches per second if the encoding is to stay reliable. So do not buy speed - buy reliable encoding.

Printer, handheld and labels from one source.
