Zebra RFD40: six metres of read range as a clip-on sled

The RFD40 is the device everything else in RFID stocktaking has to be measured against. Roughly 6 metres of nominal range and more than 1,300 tags read per second are the benchmark of this class. The price for that is a two-component solution: the sled is not a device but an attachment, and it always needs a mobile computer underneath it. This page works both sides out, the benefit and the costs alongside.

In short

The Zebra RFD40 is a UHF RFID sled: a clip-on module with a pistol grip and a trigger that turns a Zebra mobile computer into a reader for RFID labels. Per the spec sheet it reads more than 1,300 tags per second at roughly 6 metres of nominal range. For a full stocktake in fashion retail that is the classic solution. It is not a device in its own right: without a host computer and without software it counts nothing.

A sled does not sit next to the mobile computer but underneath it. The computer clicks into a cradle, the contacts of what Zebra calls the eConnex adapter supply power and the data connection, and two devices become one to look at. The grip with the trigger belongs to the sled; the display and the operation come from the computer. Anyone who has ever held a barcode scanner with a pistol grip knows the posture.

The reason for this construction is banal and decisive all the same: a UHF antenna with usable range needs room. You do not get six metres out of an antenna that fits inside a smartphone housing. The RFD40 has that room because it brings a housing of its own, and with 7,000 mAh it brings a battery of its own as well, one that carries the power draw without pulling the host battery flat.

Who this pays off for

The RFD40 is built for businesses that capture large quantities of goods regularly. In fashion retail that means the full stocktake, checking in a season delivery, transfers between branches and recurring interim counts of single product groups. In all of those the range earns its keep, because rails and shelves can be swept from the aisle instead of working up to every individual piece.

The sled is particularly obvious where Zebra mobile computers are already in use. Then you buy only the RFID part and carry on working with the devices your staff already know. The reverse holds too: anyone starting from nothing who needs exactly one device inevitably buys two devices with the RFD40. We set that calculation out in full further down, in the section on two components.

There is a third case that is easy to miss and worth naming, because it is the one where this form factor is unambiguously right. If three members of staff already carry mobile computers for goods-in, price marking and customer enquiries, and RFID is only needed for the count, then one sled passed between three hosts builds three counting positions for the price of one RFID engine. No integrated handheld can do that, because in an integrated handheld the expensive part cannot be separated from the cheap part.

What the RFD40 explicitly is not

It is not a till system and not stock control software. It delivers a list of EPC numbers read to the application on the host, and what becomes of them is decided by that software. Nor is it a replacement for a till scanner: for the selling process at the counter a pistol grip weighing 541 grams is the wrong shape, and that is what presentation scanners such as the Zebra DS9908R are for. And it prints nothing. The labels are produced beforehand, on an RFID printer that writes text, barcode and chip in one pass.

It equally does not check whether a number it has read belongs to the right article. That link is created when you marry the RFID label to the existing barcode, and it then lives in your stock file. Standard, Premium and Premium Plus kept properly apart

In short

Zebra offers the RFD40 in three tiers. The RFID performance is identical across all three: 1,300+ tags per second and roughly 6+ metres. What differs is the radio and the barcode imager. The Standard has neither, the Premium adds Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6, and the Premium Plus adds an SE4100 imager inside the sled.

What the step up to Premium actually buys

Around 230 euro net lies between the Standard and the Premium. For that you get two things. First, Bluetooth 5.3: the sled can speak to a host wirelessly instead of sitting fixed on it. That opens up operation with devices for which no eConnex adapter exists, and operation with a phone in your pocket rather than in the cradle. Second, Wi-Fi 6: the sled sits on the network in its own right and can be managed and given firmware without going through the host. Zebra advertises this as the first sled in the industry with over-the-air management.

For a single shop with one or two devices that is honestly rarely decisive. Loading firmware once a year is not a problem worth 230 euro per device. Wi-Fi 6 becomes interesting from the point where several branches each have several sleds in the field and somebody is centrally responsible for the same version running everywhere. Then remote management saves real working time.

Bluetooth is the stronger reason. If you are not sure which mobile computer you will be using in three years, a sled with a radio link of its own makes you less dependent on the adapter question. That is not a technical argument but a planning one, and planning arguments are the ones that tend to be right three years later.

What the step up to Premium Plus actually buys

From Premium to Premium Plus is another 130 euro net or so. The difference is an SE4100 barcode imager inside the sled, at 1280 by 960 pixels, with a field of view of 44.5 by 33.5 degrees and a focus from 15 centimetres. The advantage is in the handling: you pull the trigger on the pistol grip and read a barcode, without turning the device round and hunting for the camera or the scan engine of the host computer.

The catch is obvious. Almost every Zebra mobile computer that comes into question as a host already has a scan engine of its own. So you are buying a second imager for a device that already has one. That pays off in exactly two cases: where the host was deliberately bought without a scan engine, or where so much scanning happens day to day that the more comfortable hand position over the trigger saves measurable time. In a boutique with a few hundred scans a week neither is the case.

In one line: if you are buying one device for one shop, working on a Zebra mobile computer you intend to keep anyway, and taking stock two to four times a year, the Standard is enough. The 360 euro difference to the Premium Plus is better spent on labels or a second battery. Premium earns its keep from several locations upwards; Premium Plus only where the host has no scan engine of its own.

Range, read rate and frequencies in detail

In short

Per Zebra the RFD40 reads more than 1,300 tags per second at roughly 6+ metres of nominal range, and buffers up to 40,000 tags in batch mode with no connection to the server. In Europe it works in the band from 865 to 868 MHz at 0 to 30 dBm EIRP and handles EPC Class 1 Gen 2 as well as EPC Gen2 V2.

What nominal range means and what it does not

The 6+ metres are an open-field figure. It is measured with a well-readable tag, no metal, no moisture, nobody in the way. In a fashion shop the world looks different: round rails of steel, goods in several layers, labels lying between two stacks of jeans, mirrors and fitting rooms. Our own estimate, expressly not a manufacturer figure, is 2 to 5 metres that work reliably day to day.

That is not a flaw in the device. A UHF radio link depends on enough energy reaching the passive chip for it to answer, and on the weak answer getting back to the reader. Water absorbs, metal reflects, dense stacks of textiles attenuate. Anyone arguing six metres in a sales conversation produces disappointment. Anyone arguing three metres has a satisfied customer a month later.

What matters is not the maximum distance anyway, but the question of whether you have to walk up to every piece. At 2 to 5 metres you do not: a round rail is captured in passing from the aisle, a run of wall shelving in one sweep. That is exactly the difference from devices with around 1.2 metres of range, such as the Zebra EM45 RFID or the RFID variant of the Zebra TC201. There every item of stock is a working step of its own. The part the label plays in all of this is set out under RFID labels.

Read rate: the figure that is rarely the bottleneck

1,300 tags per second sounds like a lot, and Zebra states that this is up to 30 per cent faster than the nearest competitor. For your planning the figure is nonetheless less important than it looks. Work it out: 4,000 pieces divided by 1,300 tags per second is a little over three seconds of pure read time. No fashion shop will ever be held up by the read rate of its handheld.

The high rate matters for a different reason. EPC Gen2 works with slotted anti-collision: the tags do not answer at the same time but one after another, in randomly chosen slots. The more tags stand in the field at once, the more collisions and repeat rounds there are. A high rate means the reader plays those rounds through quickly, and that a densely packed rail is captured completely in a single sweep instead of individual pieces slipping past. The rate buys you completeness, not speed.

Transmit power, ERP and EIRP

Zebra states 0 to 30 dBm EIRP for the EU band. 30 dBm is 1 watt EIRP. The European limit under ETSI EN 302 208 is 2 watt ERP, which corresponds to roughly 3.3 watt EIRP. On that reading the RFD40 stays well below what would be permitted in Europe. The conversion between ERP and EIRP is our own; it follows from the 2.15 dB difference between a half-wave dipole and an isotropic radiator.

Two notes on this, because they lead to false conclusions when datasheets are compared. First, Zebra states the transmit power of the TC22R in the same band as ERP, namely 1.45 to 31.45 dBm. ERP and EIRP figures cannot be placed side by side without converting. Second, the RFD40 datasheet does not make clear whether the 0 to 30 dBm is an exact figure for the EU band or a rounded collective figure across several regions. We mark that as uncertain rather than smoothing it over. Anyone who needs the exact transmit power for a tender should obtain it in writing from the distributor. Protocols

The datasheet lists EPC Class 1 Gen 2, EPC Gen2 V2 and Zebra’s own radio technology. ISO 18000-63 is not there. That standard is technically equivalent to Gen2, but Zebra does not list it for the RFD40, so we do not claim it here either. For fashion retail it makes no practical difference: commercially available labels with chips from Impinj or NXP are Gen2 labels and are read. Batch mode: 40,000 tags with no network

The sled can buffer up to 40,000 tags read and transmit them later. That is more relevant in practice than it sounds. A shop cellar or a stockroom in the back yard rarely has good wireless coverage. With batch mode you keep counting there and synchronise when you are back upstairs. 40,000 tags cover the stock of the great majority of owner-run shops several times over.

The datasheet of a sled is short, because many rows simply do not belong to it. Display, processor, camera and NFC come from the mobile computer it sits on. The sled supplies the RFID engine, the antenna, the grip, the trigger and a 7,000 mAh battery, and on the Premium Plus a barcode imager as well.

All figures are manufacturer statements from the Zebra spec sheets for the RFD40 Standard and the RFD40 Premium series, retrieved 26.08.2026 in the GB edition, which is the one that applies to Europe. We took the EU frequency figure of 865 to 868 MHz from the spec sheet of the Premium series; the machine-retrieved Standard datasheet listed only the North American band. We assume the same radio configuration, but we mark the gap rather than hiding it.

How to read this table

A sled datasheet looks thin at first glance. That is not thrift on the manufacturer’s part but the consequence of the form factor. If you need technical data for a tender or an investment calculation, you have to lay two datasheets side by side: the sled’s and the mobile computer’s. Only the two together describe a working position. The same holds for protection rating, drop resistance and operating temperature, where the weaker of the two values is always the one that counts.

With weight it is the other way round: the figures add up. 541 grams of sled plus roughly 240 grams of mobile computer give the roughly 780 grams you actually hold in your hand. Zebra itself puts the combination of a TC22 and an RFD40 sled at around 777 grams in the TC22R datasheet, so the round figure is not ours.

One consequence of the missing rows deserves stating plainly. Because the operating system belongs to the host, the security-update question moves to the host as well. On an integrated handheld you ask one manufacturer how long the Android version will be maintained. Here you ask the same manufacturer, but about a different product with a different lifecycle, and the answer can be shorter than the service life you are planning for the sled. That is worth checking before the purchase rather than after it.

Two components

Sled plus host: what the form factor really costs

In short

An RFD40 is never one device but always two: a sled and a mobile computer. That means two batteries, two charging places and one eConnex adapter per host model. The combined weight is around 780 grams. This is the substantial disadvantage against an integrated handheld, and the point at which most quotations are incomplete.

Anyone comparing quotations for an RFID working position should first check whether everything is actually in there. With a sled, experience says at least one of these parts is missing. We list them in full so that you can ask the question.

  • The mobile computer itself. The largest item, and the one most often missing from sled quotations. Without a host the sled is a paperweight.
  • The eConnex adapter. It is specific to the host model. A business with two different host models needs two different adapters, and they are not interchangeable.
  • Two batteries. The sled has 7,000 mAh, the host has its own. Both have to be charged, both age, both are replaced eventually.
  • Two charging places. Either two separate cradles or a combined solution. Separate means two power supplies, two sockets and two places in the stockroom where something has to stand in the evening.
  • Two firmware levels. Sled and host are updated separately. On the Premium the sled can also be updated over the wireless network; on the Standard it cannot.

The eConnex adapter: the question to settle before you order

This deserves a heading of its own, because it is the most common mis-order on this device. The eConnex adapter is the link between the sled and the mobile computer. It provides the mechanical cradle and the electrical contacts, and it differs by device family. It is not an accessory in the sense of something optional: without the right one, a Standard sled and a host are two objects that cannot work together.

Three things follow from that, and all three belong in the enquiry rather than in the post-mortem.

  • Name the host model exactly, including its variant. Not “a Zebra handheld” but the model number as it stands on the label of the device you already own. Device families that sound close together do not necessarily share a cradle.
  • Ask for the adapter part number in the order confirmation. A quotation that says “including adapter” without a part number is not an answer. One line naming the article is.
  • Count the adapters, not the sleds. If you have two host models in the building and one sled that is meant to move between them, you need two adapters, and swapping is a manual operation rather than a click.

Where a suitable adapter does not exist, the Premium and Premium Plus offer a way out over Bluetooth 5.3, and for Android or iOS smartphones there is an adapter built on OtterBox uniVERSE. That is a genuine option, but it is an option the Standard does not have, and it is one of the more honest arguments for spending the money on the Premium.

This is the point where we have to be clearest, because it is where most goes wrong in procurement.

The middle column is the one to read carefully. “Not publicly confirmed” does not mean it does not work. It means we cannot evidence it from the public sources, and that you should settle it with the distributor before you buy, ideally with a concrete adapter part number in the order confirmation. If you have a TC52, a TC53 or an EM45 in the building and assume the sled will fit somehow, that assumption can be expensive.

A practical note on lifecycle: the TC21 and the TC26 have been past end of sale since 28.02.2025, with support running to 31.03.2028. If somebody offers you a bundle of an RFD40 and a TC21, you are buying a device with a limited remaining life. For a new purchase the TC22 and the TC27, or their successors, are the right choice.

The weight in figures

The Premium sled weighs 541 grams with its battery, the Premium Plus 556 grams. On top of that comes the mobile computer. Zebra itself notes in the TC22R datasheet that the integrated device, at 569 grams, is lighter than the combination of a TC22 and an RFD40 sled, which together come to around 777 grams. Round that to roughly 780 grams, and that is the figure your member of staff holds in one hand during a two-hour count.

The difference between 569 and 780 grams is a good 200 grams, about the weight of a cup of coffee. That sounds like very little, and for ten minutes it is. Over two hours with an outstretched arm, reaching up again and again to the top shelves, it is the difference between uncomfortable and irrelevant. Users mention this more often than any other criticism of sleds.

What speaks for the two-component logic

It would be unfair to name only the drawbacks. The form factor has three real advantages. First, the mobile computer remains a device in its own right: without the sled it is an ordinary handheld for goods-in, price marking, customer enquiries and whatever else your software can do. Second, one sled can be shared across several hosts where RFID is only needed for the count: three members of staff with mobile computers, one sled passed along. Third, the sled outlives a change of device. When the mobile computer is replaced in four years, in the good case you need only a new adapter and you keep the expensive RFID technology.

In practice

Stocktaking in a fashion shop: the arithmetic for 4,000 pieces

In short

For 4,000 tagged pieces across 120 square metres the pure read time of about three seconds is meaningless. The first pass across the sales floor takes six to ten minutes on two independent lines of calculation. For the complete exercise, with a second pass, the stockroom, the fitting rooms and the reconciliation, we allow one to two hours. That span is our own projection and not a manufacturer figure.

Take a concrete shop: 120 square metres of sales floor, 4,000 pieces in stock, all tagged with an RFID hangtag, plus a small stockroom in the basement and four fitting rooms. One member of staff, one RFD40 on a Zebra mobile computer, software on the host. We calculate in three stages, because the three figures mean very different amounts.

Stage 1: read time

4,000 pieces divided by 1,300 tags per second gives 3.1 seconds. That is the pure time the reader would need if all 4,000 tags stood in the field at once. The figure appears here only so that it is clear it gives you nothing for your planning. No device in this class is limited by its read rate.

Stage 2: walking time

What becomes interesting is walking the floor. We calculate it on two independent routes, because that is more honest than a single value.

Route A, over the capture rate: the rule of thumb for a handheld doing bulk capture in a shop is around 700 pieces actually captured per minute. That is a manufacturer figure for the device class and sits far below the theoretical read rate, because it already contains the walking, the sweeping and the second pass at difficult spots. 4,000 pieces divided by 700 gives 5.7 minutes.

Route B, over the walking distance: across 120 square metres with round rails, wall shelving and a sales counter, a systematic route works out at roughly 150 to 200 metres if you walk each lane once and take in the wall surfaces. With the sled you walk slowly and sweep, say 0.4 metres per second. 180 metres divided by 0.4 gives 450 seconds, that is 7.5 minutes. The assumptions about route length and walking speed are our own and depend heavily on the floor plan.

Both routes land at six to ten minutes for a complete pass across the sales floor. This is exactly where the range pays off: at two to five metres of usable distance it is enough to walk the lane. With a device reading at 1.2 metres the same member of staff would have to step up to every rail and work along every shelf row individually, and one pass would become three.

Stage 3: real time

And now the figure that counts. A stocktake does not consist of one pass. What actually arises:

  • Preparation: charge both devices, open the software, create the count, agree briefly who takes which area. 10 to 15 minutes.
  • First pass across the sales floor: 6 to 10 minutes by the calculation above.
  • Second pass: goods in the fitting rooms, in the window, behind the till, on the ironing board, at the alterations bench. Those pieces are often missed on the first pass, because they are not where anyone looks. 15 to 25 minutes.
  • Stockroom: a small area, but densely packed and often with metal shelving. Range is worth less here, because metal reflects. 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Reconciliation and the exceptions list: what has been counted, what is missing, what is doubled. Checking gaps by hand. 20 to 40 minutes, depending on how clean the opening stock was.

That comes to 66 to 110 minutes in total. This is why we speak of one to two hours for a shop of this size. That span is our own projection. It appears in no Zebra datasheet and it is not a promise. It holds under three conditions: the stock is tagged completely, the labels sit in places where they can be read, and the software reconciles cleanly against the target stock. What can overturn the calculation

Staying honest means naming the disruptions. Untagged legacy stock is the largest: anyone who has to tag 4,000 pieces first should work with 200 to 300 pieces per person per hour, so 13 to 20 person-hours once, before the first fast stocktake is possible at all. Second, labels directly on metal or close to liquids: an RFID label stuck flat on a metal hanger is read badly. Third, densely stacked goods, where the inner pieces are shielded by the outer ones. Fourth, trading while you count: if customers move goods during the count, differences arise that nobody can resolve afterwards. And fifth, specific to a sled, a host that was charged while the sled was not, or the other way round.

For comparison, on why the effort is worth it: without RFID, stock accuracy in fashion retail typically sits at 65 to 75 per cent, with RFID at 93 to 99 per cent, and the sales effect is put at up to 5.5 per cent. Those figures come from a study by Beck from 2018 for the ECR Shrinkage & On-Shelf Availability Group and GS1 UK, not from us and not from a hardware manufacturer.

Limits

What the Zebra RFD40 is not good for

In short

The RFD40 is a stocktaking device and nothing else. For the till it is too bulky, for all-day carrying it is too heavy, and at IP54 it sits one step below the integrated handhelds. The two-component form factor raises the purchase price, the charging effort and the complexity. Anyone who needs exactly one device for exactly one shop is often better served by an integrated handheld.

IP54: what that means concretely in a shop

The first digit describes protection against foreign bodies, the second against water. The 5 means dust-protected: dust can get in, but not in a quantity that impairs function. Dust-tight would be a 6. The 4 means protection against splashing water from all directions. Water from a jet would be a 5, temporary immersion a 7.

For a fashion shop that means, in practice: the knocked-over coffee on the counter is uncritical, so is the walk across the yard to goods-in in drizzle, and so is the layer of dust on the top shelf. What does not work is rinsing under the tap, wiping with a dripping cloth, and permanent use in a dusty environment, for instance during a shop refit. Anyone using the sled among building dust and plasterboard should clean it carefully afterwards.

Placed honestly, IP54 is generally sufficient for fashion retail. It is nonetheless a step below what integrated devices such as the TC22R offer at IP65, and if your business also includes outdoor storage, market stalls or logistics areas, the difference is relevant. On drop resistance there is nothing to criticise: repeated 1.5 metre drops onto concrete and 500 tumble cycles are rugged-class figures.

And note where the rating stops. IP54 describes the sled. The mobile computer clipped into it has a rating of its own, and a working position is only ever as sealed as its weaker half. That cuts both ways here: many Zebra hosts are rated above the sled, so on this particular pairing the sled is usually the limiting part.

Not suitable for use at the till

A sled with a pistol grip is the wrong form factor at the sales counter. Taking payment needs one hand for the goods and one for the till system, and a 780-gram package in between gets in the way. For RFID at the till there are presentation scanners that stand hands-free in a cradle and work at a deliberately short range of around 45 centimetres, so that the goods of the next customer are not counted in as well. How that works is on the page about the Zebra DS9908R.

Not suitable as an everyday device carried on the person

Anyone looking for a device a member of staff carries on the belt all day and uses for enquiries, taking orders, telephoning and the occasional look-up is not buying a sled. Smartphone form factors are meant for that. The RFD40 is clipped on for the count and taken off again afterwards. That separation is not an accident; it is the logic of the form factor.

Not suitable when the budget stretches to exactly one device

This is the most uncomfortable point. 839 euro net for the Standard sounds cheaper than 1,295 euro for an integrated handheld. As soon as the mobile computer is added, the picture turns round. Anyone starting from nothing should calculate both routes rather than comparing sled prices alone. The section on alternatives sets that calculation out.

The arithmetic that decides this purchase. Sled 839 euro net plus a value-tier mobile computer at 649 to 881 euro net puts a complete working position at roughly 1,500 to 1,700 euro net, before the adapter, the charging solution and the labels. An integrated TC22R costs 1,295 euro net, is one device with one battery and one cradle, and is rated IP65 rather than IP54. The RFD40 pays off when the host is already there, or when several people share one RFID engine. Starting from nothing with one counting position, the integrated device is the simpler buy.

Not suitable without documented compatibility

And the point that causes the most trouble: if you have an existing TC52, TC53 or EM45 in the building and assume the sled will fit, that can end expensively. For those devices the combination is not publicly confirmed by our research. Buy only once the distributor has named the concrete adapter part number, in writing, in the order confirmation. It is one line, and it is the cheapest insurance on this page.

To place how the market prices this device, here are the US reseller prices. We expressly do not convert them into euro: the exchange rate, customs, the tax system, the warranty terms and the distribution structure are all different, and a conversion would suggest a European price that does not exist in that form.

What comes alongside the device

The sled price is the smaller part of a working position. These items belong in any honest calculation.

  • The mobile computer. The largest single item. A current value-tier mobile computer such as the Zebra TC201 sits at 649 to 881 euro net depending on configuration (AutoID Warehouse, as at 08/2026). That puts the combination of sled and host quickly at 1,500 to 2,000 euro net.
  • The eConnex adapter. A compulsory part, specific to the host model. We have no public European list price with a reliable source. Have it shown as a line in the quotation rather than assuming it is included.
  • A charging solution. A single-slot or multi-slot charging station, plus a four-slot battery charger for spare batteries in larger installations. Here too we have no public European price.
  • A spare battery. A second 7,000 mAh battery makes sense for all-day counts and is due anyway after three or four years.
  • Labels. The running item. In small quantities figure on roughly 12 to 15 cents apiece. For 4,000 pieces of initial tagging that is around 480 to 600 euro; after that they arise only for new goods. Details on the page about RFID labels.
  • Label printing. Anyone tagging their own goods needs an RFID printer that produces text, barcode and chip in one pass.
  • Software and setup. The sled delivers numbers, not stock control. Software, the interface to the till system and the handover are items of their own. The handover itself is short; we allow around half an hour.

Put the whole of that together and the picture changes. A working position built on a Standard sled, with a host bought for the purpose, an adapter, a charging place and a spare battery, sits above the price of an integrated handheld that raises none of those questions. That is not an argument against the RFD40; it is the argument for being clear about which of the two situations you are in before you compare prices at all.

Accessories, charging and software

In short

For the RFD40 Zebra offers eConnex adapters per host model, a Cable Cup with a USB-C connector, single-slot and multi-slot charging stations, a four-slot battery charger, a belt holster and a battery locking foot. On the software side there are 123RFID Desktop, the Zebra RFID SDKs and device management through SOTI Connect.

Connection and mounting

The eConnex adapter is the link between the sled and the mobile computer. It provides the mechanical cradle and the electrical contacts and differs by device family. In a comparison of quotations it is the item most often missing, which is why it has a section of its own further up under two components.

The Cable Cup is a cap fitted onto the sled that provides a USB-C socket. With it you charge the sled directly from a cable and, where needed, establish a wired data connection without occupying a charging cradle. Practical for businesses that rarely need to charge and do not want to set up a fixed charging place.

The belt holster takes the sled when both hands have to be free, for instance when moving goods between two counting sections. The battery locking foot secures the battery in the housing; that is worth having wherever devices pass through several hands or are put down in public areas.

Charging

For a single shop with one device a single-slot charging station is enough. It stands in the office or the stockroom, the sled goes in at the end of the day, done. Where several sleds are in use there are multi-slot charging stations taking four or more devices. For working with spare batteries Zebra offers a four-slot battery charger, known in the trade as a battery toaster.

The practical advice: plan charging places for both components. A sled that is charged and a mobile computer that is flat do not together make a stocktake. The most common disruption on a count day is not a technical defect but a device that spent the night off the cradle. With a two-component solution there are two ways for that to happen, which is the honest reason to buy a combined charging solution rather than two loose power supplies.

Manufacturer software

123RFID Desktop is Zebra’s free tool for configuration and testing. With it you set the transmit power and the read mode, check how many tags are captured in one sweep, and test before the first count whether your label position works. For commissioning it is the first place to go.

The Zebra RFID SDKs are the interface for application developers. Every piece of software that drives the sled does so through this SDK, and it is the reason RFID applications for Zebra hardware come together comparatively quickly.

SOTI Connect is a platform for managing RFID devices in the field. It becomes interesting from several locations upwards: configuration, firmware and status queries run centrally. For one shop with one device it is effort without return.

Labels and printers

The sled reads what was written beforehand. Commercially available UHF hangtags with chips from Impinj or NXP work; which construction suits clothing, footwear and accessories is set out in our guide to RFID labels. When another device fits better

In short

The RFD40 is the right choice when Zebra mobile computers are already in the building, or when several members of staff share one RFID module. For a single shop starting from nothing, the integrated TC22R is usually the simpler solution and barely more expensive in total. For the till, for single-item searching and for future planning, other devices apply.

Zebra TC22R: the obvious counter-model

The TC22R is an integrated handheld: RFID, barcode, NFC, camera and touchscreen in one housing. The same 1,300 tags per second, IP65 instead of IP54, 569 grams instead of roughly 780, one battery, one cradle, no adapter. Against that, 1,295 euro net compared with 839 euro for the sled. As soon as you count the mobile computer in, the TC22R is cheaper and simpler for single-device operation.

One note on care: the range figure for the TC22R is contradictory within Zebra’s own sources. The European datasheet states 24.4 metres, the North American one 12.2 metres. We work with the conservative figure. The contradiction is set out at length on that device page.

When the RFD40 wins anyway

First, when Zebra mobile computers are already in use and the compatibility is confirmed. Then you buy only the RFID part. Second, when several members of staff have devices but RFID is needed only for the count: one sled moves between three hosts. Third, when you intend to change your mobile computer platform in the foreseeable future and want the RFID investment decoupled from that decision.

The two Chainway sleds and handhelds in comparison

The Chainway R6 is the other sled in this section and pursues the same basic idea from the other end. It clamps a phone you already own into the front and pairs over Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0, so it is not tied to one device platform and costs 659 euro net. What it gives up is the fixed mechanical and electrical connection, and it carries the same IP54 rating as the RFD40. If Zebra mobile computers are already in the building, you buy the RFD40. If you are starting from nothing and have a suitable phone lying around, the R6 is the cheaper way in.

The Chainway C72 at 942 euro net and the Chainway C5 at 992 euro net are integrated handhelds with a pistol grip, IP65 and manufacturer ranges above those of the RFD40. Read those figures with care: they are open-field values measured with large anti-metal tags, and the ratio between a catalogue figure and a shop is roughly the same whichever manufacturer states it. The more useful difference is elsewhere: Zebra sets its radio standards out in its documents and has a broad European distribution channel, which matters more for a single shop than a larger number in a datasheet.

The other devices in this section

The DS9908R is not a competitor but the complement at the till: roughly 45 centimetres of range, deliberately short so that neighbouring goods are not read in as well, plus barcode and optional deactivation of electronic article surveillance in the same housing. Corded, and at IP42 the weakest protection level in this section.

The EM45 RFID in a smartphone format is unsuitable for a full stocktake at roughly 1.2 metres and 20 tags per second. The read rate is not the problem; the range is, because you have to walk up to every piece. As a device for single-article searching, price marking and spot checks at goods-in it has its place.

The TC201 is the most interesting future platform in this section, with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 and IP65 plus IP68. Its RFID variant is designed for near-field capture at roughly 1.2 metres and 200+ tags per second, and in Europe it is announced only for the end of 2026. For a project meant to run this year it is not an option.

The MEFERI ME87 is technically the most interesting approach: the UHF engine sits in the processor rather than in an add-on module. At roughly 2 metres of range and IP68 it would be usable for many tasks. For Europe there is currently neither a visible distribution channel nor a radio test standard for UHF in the datasheet, and there is no price. Watch it, do not buy it.

Our recommendation in one line

In one line: one shop, one device, no existing Zebra estate: the TC22R. Existing Zebra mobile computers, or several members of staff sharing one RFID module: the RFD40 Standard. A suitable phone already there and a tight budget: the Chainway R6. A till position alongside: the DS9908R. Everything else in this section is currently either too short in range or not obtainable in Europe.

Law and radio

Radio approval: what applies in Europe

The legal frame

UHF RFID in Europe runs in the 865 to 868 MHz band, harmonised across the EU and the EEA through CEPT recommendation ERC/REC 70-03 and the harmonised standard ETSI EN 302 208, which permits up to 2 W ERP. No individual licence, no registration and no spectrum fee is required. Zebra states the EU band in the spec sheet and names EN 302 208 in its own documents. A build for 902 to 928 MHz may not be operated here.

The European frame

UHF RFID readers in Europe operate in the band from 865 to 868 MHz. That band is harmonised across the European Union and the European Economic Area through CEPT recommendation ERC/REC 70-03 on short range devices, and the technical basis is the harmonised standard ETSI EN 302 208 in its version V3.4.1 of December 2023, which permits up to 2 watt ERP for interrogators in this band. A further band from 915 to 921 MHz with up to 4 watt ERP is available in addition; which parts of it are released nationally differs between member states.

Because the band is harmonised, the same device is lawful in every EU and EEA country. What differs is the national regulator that administers the general authorisation: the Bundesnetzagentur in Germany, ARCEP in France, UKE in Poland, RDI in the Netherlands, and so on for the other member states. The list is longer than that and there is no point reproducing it here; the point is that the frame is common and only the administering authority changes.

For normal operation within that general authorisation, no individual licence and no registration is needed, and no spectrum fee is payable. You buy the device, you switch it on, and you keep the conformity papers. Responsibility for operating within the frame sits with the operator, that is with your business, not with the dealer.

The United Kingdom sits outside this. Since leaving the EU it applies its own rules, with Ofcom Interface Requirement IR 2030 for licence-exempt short range devices and UKCA marking in place of CE; if you are buying for a UK site, check the current position with your supplier rather than relying on the European frame described here.

A frequent misunderstanding concerns the comparison with the United States, where 4 watt EIRP applies. Because ERP and EIRP differ by 2.15 dB, 2 watt ERP corresponds to roughly 3.3 watt EIRP. The American limit is therefore only about 20 per cent above the European one, not double, as is occasionally written. That conversion is our own.

What Zebra documents, and why that is worth saying

On this page we can be more definite than on some others in this section, and the difference is worth naming. Zebra sets out the European band in the spec sheet, 865 to 868 MHz at 0 to 30 dBm EIRP, and names ETSI EN 302 208 in its own documents. That is not a given. Other manufacturers in this price class publish a frequency figure and leave the row for certifications empty, so that a buyer has to ask a distributor for the EU declaration of conformity before knowing which standards were applied at all.

What that changes for you is small but real. You can read the standard the device was built against instead of inferring it, you can quote it in a tender, and if the question is ever asked you have a manufacturer statement rather than a dealer assurance. Ask for the EU declaration of conformity anyway and file it with the device papers, because that is the document that lists the standards applied, and anyone passing devices on commercially needs it in any case. But with this manufacturer you are confirming something already documented rather than discovering it.

What CE means and what it does not

The CE marking is the manufacturer’s declaration, or that of the responsible economic operator, that the device meets the applicable EU rules, in the case of radio devices above all the Radio Equipment Directive. It is not an official test and not a quality seal. For you as the operator it is nonetheless the decisive basis, because without it the device may not be placed on the EU market. The accompanying paper is the EU declaration of conformity, and it is the document in which the reference to EN 302 208 appears.

The awkward part: builds for other regions

The North American build of the RFD40 works in the band from 902 to 928 MHz. That band is allocated differently in Europe, among other things to mobile network services. Operating such a device here would be an unlawful use of spectrum, regardless of whether the device works technically. It will work; that is precisely the problem.

In practice that means: pay attention to the region code in the article number. Zebra uses, among others, the code -WR for the worldwide 900 MHz variant and -US and -FT for the United States and Canada. Which code exactly designates the configuration approved for Europe we cannot establish unambiguously from the public sources. Have the distributor confirm in writing that the device delivered is configured for 865 to 868 MHz and approved for operation in your country. That one line in the order confirmation saves a great deal of trouble in case of doubt. Be particularly alert with marketplace listings and grey imports, where stock built for North America is regularly sold with no note at all.

Frequently asked questions about the Zebra RFD40

How far does the Zebra RFD40 actually read?

Zebra states roughly 6+ metres of nominal read range in the spec sheet, which is 19.7+ feet. That is an open-field figure, measured with a well-readable tag and nothing in the way. In a shop, with textiles on steel rails, stacked goods and people between the antenna and the label, 2 to 5 metres is the realistic working distance. That reduction is our own estimate and no manufacturer figure. For a stocktake it is ample, because a rail can be swept from the aisle instead of walking up to every piece.

What is the difference between Standard, Premium and Premium Plus?

The RFID performance is identical across all three tiers: 1,300+ tags per second and roughly 6+ metres. The Standard, RFD4030, has no radio of its own and no imager; it works through the mobile computer it sits on. The Premium, RFD4031-G00B700, adds Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6, so wireless operation and remote management. The Premium Plus, RFD4031-G10B700, adds an SE4100 barcode imager in the sled itself.

Do I need a Zebra mobile computer for the RFD40?

For the Standard, in practice yes, because it has no radio of its own and is joined to the host through the eConnex adapter. Zebra states that the Premium and Premium Plus can also be run wirelessly over Bluetooth 5.3, and for Android or iOS smartphones there is an adapter built on OtterBox uniVERSE. Either way the sled is not a device in its own right: without a host running software it counts nothing.

Which eConnex adapter do I need, and does the RFD40 fit my existing handheld?

The eConnex adapter is specific to the host model, and picking the wrong one is the most common mis-order on this device. Zebra names the TC21 and TC26 and the EC50 and EC55 expressly, and states generally that the sled works with current and future Zebra mobile computers. The TC22 and TC27 combination is documented in that device's own datasheet. For the TC52, the TC53 and the EM45 we found no public confirmation. Have the adapter part number written into the order confirmation before you buy.

How long does a stocktake of 4,000 pieces take with an RFD40?

The pure read time at 1,300 tags per second works out at about three seconds and is therefore meaningless. What counts is walking the floor. Two independent lines of calculation both land at six to ten minutes for a first pass across 120 square metres. For the complete exercise, with a second pass, the stockroom, the fitting rooms and the reconciliation, we allow one to two hours. That span is our own projection and not a Zebra measurement.

What does the Zebra RFD40 cost?

The German dealer ico.de lists the Standard from 839 euro net, the Premium with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth at around 1,069 euro and the Premium Plus with the scan engine at around 1,199 euro, as at 08/2026. Not included are the mobile computer the sled sits on, the eConnex adapter, charging solutions and the labels. All prices are net, excluding VAT. The sled alone is never the price of a working position.

Is IP54 enough for a fashion shop?

In most cases yes. IP54 means dust-protected and protected against splashing water from all directions. Coffee knocked over on the counter, or rain on the walk to goods-in, is uncritical. What does not work is rinsing the device under running water or permanent use in dust and damp. The integrated handhelds in this class sit one step above at IP65, and if your business includes outdoor storage or logistics areas that difference is not academic.

May I operate a North American RFD40 in Europe?

No. The North American build works in the band from 902 to 928 MHz, which is allocated differently in Europe. Operating it here would be an unlawful use of spectrum, whether or not the device works technically. In Europe the band runs from 865 to 868 MHz at up to 2 W ERP under the harmonised standard ETSI EN 302 208. Buy a build configured for Europe and have the region code of the article confirmed in writing.
