Zebra TC201: a strong platform with an uncertain RFID build

The TC201 is Zebra’s new value-tier mobile computer and replaces the TC22 and the TC27 as one common platform. Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, IP65 plus IP68, a 1.83 metre drop rating, 245 grams, from 648.83 euro net. UHF RFID is optional — and that is exactly where the catch sits. The RFID build is announced for Europe only for the end of 2026, and the figures in circulation, roughly 1.2 metres of range and 200+ tags per second, come from the trade rather than from an official Zebra datasheet. This page sets out what is documented, what is not, and what the device is good for in a fashion shop.

What the TC201 is, and what it is not

In short

The Zebra TC201 is a rugged Android handheld of the entry and mid class, which Zebra positions as the successor to the TC22 and the TC27. It has a barcode scanner, a 6-inch touchscreen and an optional mobile network. UHF RFID is an option on selected article numbers and not a standard feature. For Europe that RFID build is, on the evidence available to us, announced for the end of 2026 — announced, not available.

Anyone who knows the TC2x series knows the role: a device for people who read barcodes all day, call up order lists and check goods in. Not a powerhouse and not a specialist reader, but the workhorse for branches, stockrooms and service counters. The TC201 is that role rebuilt on current hardware. Zebra states up to 150 per cent more performance against the TC21, TC22, TC26 and TC27, a manufacturer figure that is consistent with the move to the Qualcomm Dragonwing Q-6690 and to LPDDR5 memory.

What is remarkable about the platform is less the processing power than the radio part. Wi-Fi 7 with tri-band and 2×2 MU-MIMO is unusual in this price class, and so is Bluetooth 6.0. For a fashion shop that is not a selling point for tomorrow morning but a question of service life: a device bought in 2026 should still work in 2032, in a wireless network that will look different from today’s. Add to that a ruggedness above what the price suggests: IP65 and IP68 at the same time, a 1.83 metre drop onto concrete, operation from -20 °C. That last figure is irrelevant on a sales floor and highly relevant for goods-in at an open roller door in January.

And what it is not. The TC201 is not an RFID stocktaking device in the sense of the other devices in this section. It has no pistol grip with a directional antenna, no dedicated RFID trigger on the base device, and the optional UHF unit is designed for short distances. In the descriptions available to us Zebra speaks of “precision targeting” for single articles. That is an honest label: it is about the one piece you are looking for, not about the rail you are counting.

It equally does not replace an RFID printer. The labels have to be printed and written beforehand; the handheld only reads them. And it replaces no stock control software — it delivers numbers that a system has to hold against a target stock. One sentence carries more weight on this page than any specification line, so it stands here as well as in the sections below. The RFID build of the TC201 is announced for the end of 2026 in Europe and is not a device you can buy in Europe today. Everything the trade states about its RFID performance is a distributor figure without a manufacturer datasheet behind it. If you are procuring this year, this page is here to save you a wasted enquiry, not to sell you a device.

Who this is the right device for

The barcode builds of the TC201 are obtainable and are a sensible purchase for a business that wants a light, modern handheld for goods-in, transfers, price marking and order queries, and that intends to keep it for six years. 245 grams is genuinely light; it is less than half a TC22R. The accessory compatibility with the TC22 and the TC27 makes it the natural next device for anyone who already has those cradles on the wall.

The RFID build is a different question, and today it is not a purchasing question at all but a watch-list entry. We would rather write that plainly than describe a device you cannot order.

The two builds: Wi-Fi and 5G

The platform comes in a Wi-Fi-only build and a build with 5G Sub-6 per 3GPP Rel-17, carrying a SIM slot plus two eSIM profiles. In the old line-up those roles belonged to the TC22 and the TC27 respectively, and the TC201 brings them into one product. For a single shop the Wi-Fi build is normally the right one: the device works inside your own network, and a mobile contract per device is an annual cost you do not need.

There are two cases where the 5G build earns its surcharge. The first is a shop whose stockroom or basement is not reached by the wireless network, an old building with thick walls being the usual culprit. Rather than a second access point in a place with no cabling, a device that falls back to a mobile network can be the cheaper repair. The second is work outside your own rooms: a count in a rented interim store, a pop-up, a market stall, or goods-in at a warehouse belonging to somebody else. Check the coverage in the corners of your own building before you decide, because that measurement takes ten minutes and settles the question either way.

Market confusion

Model history: the TC21 RFID that never existed

In short

A Zebra TC21 with integrated UHF RFID never existed. The TC21 and the TC26 could do UHF only through a clipped-on sled, as a rule the RFD40. The last entry-level handheld with a genuinely built-in UHF reader was the TC20 RFID on Android 7.0, long discontinued. Anyone looking for an entry-level device with RFID inside the housing today ends up at the TC22R, not at the TC201.

This confusion costs time and money in practice, which is why it is set out here at length. In tenders, in forums and even in dealer listings a “TC21 RFID” or a “TC26 RFID” keeps appearing. What is almost always meant is the combination of a TC21 or a TC26 with a clipped-on RFD40 sled. That is a legitimate arrangement and a proven one in many shops — but it is two devices with two batteries, two charging routes and a matching adapter. It is not a handheld with RFID built in.

The historical predecessor with a genuine integrated reader was the TC20 RFID, SKU family TC200J-10C213xx. It ran Android 7.0. A device on that operating system cannot responsibly be put into a till or stock control network in 2026: no security updates, no current TLS libraries, no support from modern device management. Anyone offered one second-hand should know that.

The lifecycle of the intermediate generation matters just as much. The TC21 and the TC26 reached end of sale on 28.02.2025; support runs to 31.03.2028. So they can no longer be procured, and they can be repaired for a while yet. Anyone facing the question of whether to add two devices to an existing TC21 fleet already has the answer: that is no longer possible through normal channels, and a fleet on a platform whose support ends in about eighteen months is not extended but replaced.

The TC201 is precisely that replacement — but for the barcode role, not automatically for the RFID role. A TC21-plus-RFD40 combination is not replaced by a TC201 with a 1.2 metre near field; it is replaced by a TC22R, or by a new sled on a new mobile computer. That is the heart of the confusion: the successor to the platform is not the successor to the function.

RFID in detail

RFID performance: 1.2 metres, and what is unsafe about it

The honest answer

The RFID figures in circulation for the TC201 are roughly 1.2 metres of range and over 200 tags per second. Both numbers come from distributor sources only. No official Zebra spec sheet with RFID figures for the TC201 was retrievable on 26.08.2026. Transmit power, the concrete EU frequency bands and the supported EPC protocols are therefore not verifiable.

That is not a detail; it is the most important sentence on this page. For every other device in this section we can quote the frequency range and the transmit power from a datasheet: for the RFD40 865 to 868 MHz at 0 to 30 dBm EIRP, for the TC22R 865 to 868 MHz at 1.45 to 31.45 dBm ERP, for the DS9908R 3 to 22 dBm. For the TC201 we cannot. We say so openly instead of writing down a plausible number.

What 1.2 metres mean in practice

Range statements are open-field values as a matter of principle: one tag, one antenna, nothing in between. In a shop there are metal rails, stacked goods, people and damp textiles in between, and the chip often lies between two layers of clothing. Six metres nominal turn into 2 to 5 metres, with which you can sweep a rail from the aisle. 1.2 metres nominal turn into a distance at which you have to guide the device through the goods. That is the real difference, not the read rate.

In one line: 200 tags per second sounds small against 1,300 — but it is never the bottleneck. 4,000 pieces at 200 tags/s are roughly 20 seconds of pure read time. The bottleneck is the range: at 1.2 metres you have to walk up to every single piece instead of capturing a whole rail in passing. That is what decides between one hour of stocktaking and three.

A reasoned suspicion about the technology

The TC201 uses the Qualcomm Dragonwing Q-6690. The same processor sits under the MEFERI ME87, and that manufacturer describes a UHF engine integrated into the processor without a separate decoding module, delivering up to 200 tags per second at roughly 2 metres of range over a shared antenna. The closeness of the numbers suggests that the TC201 too uses a processor-integrated engine rather than a standalone RFID module. That is an inference of ours and no manufacturer statement. We set it out because it explains why the range comes out so low, and because it shows the direction this class of device is taking: RFID as a side function of the radio part, not as a subsystem of its own.

What you have to settle before you buy

As long as no datasheet exists, these are the points that should come from the distributor in writing: the exact SKU of the RFID build for Europe, the frequency band, the transmit power in ERP, the supported protocols (EPC Class 1 Gen2, Gen2 V2), the existence of an EU declaration of conformity citing ETSI EN 302 208, the available RFID SDK, and whether a pistol grip or an RFID trigger is offered at all. Without those answers a quotation is not a quotation but a statement of intent.

Two figures deserve a second look. First the combination of IP65 and IP68: IP65 stands for water jets from any direction, IP68 for temporary immersion. Both together mean the device may be hosed down and may also fall into a bucket. Second the 245 grams. A TC22R weighs 569 grams, a combination of a TC22 and an RFD40 sled roughly 777 grams. Anyone holding a device in the hand all day feels that difference clearly.

One row is worth reading twice, and it is the operating system line. The TC201 is absent from Zebra’s table of supported Android versions, checked on 26.08.2026. So the concrete Android version and the end of security support are unknown. For an investment meant to last six years that is an open flank, even if experience says it usually clears up around the market launch. If a guaranteed support period matters to your case, have the distributor confirm it in writing.

Note also what is not in this table: no line for the EU frequency band of the RFID option, no line for its transmit power, and no line for its protocols. Those rows are missing because the figures do not exist publicly, not because we left them out for brevity.

In practice

In a fashion shop: 4,000 pieces across 120 square metres

In short

A fashion shop of 120 square metres with roughly 4,000 tagged pieces is our standard example. With a device at roughly 1.2 metres of range the pure read time is meaningless: 20 seconds. What decides the day is walking, changing position and fanning out densely hung goods. Our projection lands at two to three hours instead of one to two.

The calculation in detail, with the assumptions named openly. The shop has 40 rails holding an average of 80 pieces, so 3,200 pieces of hanging stock. Add 20 shelf compartments of folded goods at 40 pieces each, so 800 pieces. Every piece carries a UHF label on the hangtag.

Step one: the pure read time

4,000 tags at 200 tags per second come to 20 seconds. Even if the read rate halves in the shop it is 40 seconds. This number turns up in sales conversations constantly and carries no information at all — no device of this class fails on the read rate.

Step two: positions and walking

At 1.2 metres nominal, and realistically markedly less in dense goods, you need at least one holding position per running metre of rail, and rather two where the goods hang tightly. Take two positions per rail at five seconds of dwell plus four seconds to move: 40 times 2 times 9 seconds is twelve minutes. The 20 shelf compartments at ten seconds each come to a good three minutes. Walking between the roughly 100 positions across 120 square metres adds another ten minutes. So far: around 25 minutes.

Step three: the item that overturns everything

Now comes the part that stands in no datasheet. With a near field of a good metre in the open and a few decimetres inside dense goods, you will not reach the labels in the middle of a fully hung rail. Textile attenuates, metal rails reflect, and the tags lie between the layers. You have to fan the goods out. At 40 rails and 90 seconds each for pushing them apart and putting them straight again, that is an hour. Add a second pass for the pieces missing from the first round: 20 to 30 minutes.

The result

In total we land at roughly two hours of pure capture, plus resolving the discrepancies. Realistically that is two to three hours for this shop with one person. For comparison: with a device at 6 metres of nominal range the fanning-out item disappears almost entirely, because you capture the rail from the aisle. What is left there is roughly 20 to 30 minutes of walking and reading.

To place our own one-to-two-hour figure: the statement that a stocktake with HANGCOUNT is done in one to two hours depending on shop size is our own projection. It rests on a reading performance of roughly 700 pieces per minute in shop conditions and on devices with several metres of range. With a 1.2 metre device such as the TC201 that projection is not reached. That is no flaw in the TC201 — it is not built for this task.

What it is good for in a shop: searching for a single piece that is in the stock file but cannot be found. Spot checks at goods-in when a carton of 30 pieces arrives. Checking that the labels of a new collection were written correctly. And everything that is barcode work anyway: goods-in, transfers, price marking, order queries. Where a near-field reader is genuinely the better tool

One job in an RFID shop is done better by a short range than by a long one, and it is the job that comes first: marrying the labels to the existing barcode. You take a piece of goods, scan its barcode, hold the new RFID label against the device, and the two numbers are joined in the stock file. At that moment you want to read exactly one label, the one in your hand, and nothing else on the table. A reader that reaches three metres has to be turned down in power or held away from the stack; a reader that reaches a metre does the job as it stands.

The same logic applies to checking a new collection. If the labels of an incoming delivery were written by the supplier, you want to verify a sample rather than sweep the whole carton, and a near-field device gives you a clean single read per piece. And it applies to the till-adjacent jobs: reading one tag off a returned garment, checking that a piece really carries the label its ticket claims. None of that is a stocktake, and all of it is daily work in a shop that runs RFID.

So the honest summary of the TC201 in practice is not that its RFID is weak but that it is aimed at a different half of the work. If a stocktaking device is already in the building, a light barcode handheld with near-field RFID alongside it is a sensible pair. If it is the only device you are buying, it will be asked to do the half it is not built for.

One figure belongs alongside all of this, because it is the reason for doing any of it. Without RFID, stock records in fashion retail typically sit at 65 to 75 per cent accuracy; with regular RFID counting at 93 to 99 per cent, and the sales effect is put at up to 5.5 per cent. Those figures come from a study by Beck from 2018 for the ECR Shrinkage & On-Shelf Availability Group and GS1 UK, not from us and not from a hardware manufacturer. They are reached through counting often, and counting often is a question of how long one count takes.

In order, without soft focus. The heaviest point is not the range but the obtainability. A device whose relevant build is announced for the end of 2026, and for which no binding date exists, cannot be planned into a project meant to run this year. Between an announcement and the actual availability of an EU SKU, enterprise hardware regularly takes months, and then distributors need further time to build stock. Announced is not available, and on this page the difference is the whole story.

The second point is the state of the evidence. It is unusual for a device to be described in such detail on the platform side while only two numbers from the trade exist for its RFID part. As long as Zebra publishes no spec sheet with a frequency band and a transmit power, it cannot even be said whether the European build reaches the same range as a US one. That is not a theoretical problem: Europe permits 2 W ERP, the United States 4 W EIRP, which is roughly 20 per cent more transmit power. On an already tight near field, that shows.

The third point concerns the form factor. A flat handheld without a pistol grip has no directional antenna with a defined main lobe. On a sled the antenna points where you aim; on a flat device the antenna radiates wherever it happens to sit in the housing. That makes selective reading harder and finding a single piece slower, because the typical Geiger-counter behaviour is absent or markedly weaker. Whether Zebra offers a pistol grip with an RFID trigger for this purpose is not known to us.

And the fourth point, which is often overlooked: the TC201 is absent from Zebra’s table of supported Android versions. So it is unknown up to which Android version the device will be maintained and when security support ends. On an investment meant to last six years that is an open flank, even if it usually clears up around the market launch.

Not a stocktaking device, and it does not claim to be

It is worth being fair about this. Nothing in Zebra’s positioning of the TC201 promises a full stocktake. The wording used is precision targeting for single articles, and that is exactly what a near-field reader is for. The disappointment only arises when a quotation puts an RFID option on a value-tier handheld next to the phrase “RFID stocktaking” and lets the buyer draw the conclusion. If you see that combination in a proposal, ask for the range figure and for the document it comes from.

The span from 648.83 to 881.34 euro, so roughly 649 to 881 euro net, covers memory, the scan engine, battery size and the mobile network. The 8 GB build with UFS 3.1 and the AC670 scan engine drive the price, and so does the 5G build. For a fashion shop the base configuration with the SR500 and Wi-Fi is normally enough; the AC670 with up to 30 metres of reading distance is a warehouse subject, not a sales-floor one.

Note what the table cannot show. There is no published price for the RFID SKU, and that is consistent rather than surprising: a build announced for the end of 2026 has no price list yet. Any figure you are quoted today for a TC201 with RFID is a dealer estimate. Ask what it is based on.

What comes alongside the device

A handheld alone is never the whole calculation. Add a charging cradle, and with several devices a multi-slot station, readily in the range of several hundred euro. A spare battery, so that a device does not drop out in the middle of a count. The RFID labels, in fashion retail roughly 12 to 15 cents apiece in small quantities, which for 4,000 pieces of initial tagging is around 480 to 600 euro. An RFID printer if you want to mark goods yourself — without one, tagging the legacy stock does not work. Then the software that turns read numbers into a stock figure, and the setup including the interface to the till system. For tagging the legacy stock allow 200 to 300 pieces per person per hour; at 4,000 pieces that is roughly two working days.

Put that together and the device price is the smaller half of a first installation. That is not an argument against the TC201; it is the argument for comparing complete working positions rather than device line items when two quotations sit side by side.

How to read a quotation that offers a TC201 with RFID

If a quotation reaches you this year listing a TC201 with UHF RFID, it is not automatically wrong. It is a promise about a build that is announced for the end of 2026, and a promise can be written down properly. These are the lines that turn it into something you can hold somebody to.

  • The exact SKU of the RFID build for Europe, in the quotation itself rather than in a covering email.
  • A delivery date, not a quarter. If the supplier cannot give one, that is the answer to whether you can plan with the device.
  • The frequency band and the transmit power in ERP, in writing, and the confirmation that the device is approved for operation in your country.
  • The supported protocols, at least EPC Class 1 Gen2 and Gen2 V2, plus whether the device can write labels or only read them.
  • The EU declaration of conformity, or a commitment to supply it on delivery, naming the standards applied.
  • What happens if the date slips. A right to withdraw, or a substitute device at the same price, costs the supplier nothing if the schedule holds.

None of that is unusual for enterprise hardware, and a good distributor will supply it without argument. What you should not accept is a range figure quoted as a manufacturer specification when it is a distributor figure repeated from a shop listing. Ask for the document. If it does not exist, the number does not either.

Charging, holding, managing

In short

The strongest practical argument for the platform is dull and rarely mentioned: the accessories are largely backward compatible with the TC22 and the TC27 per manufacturer statements. Charging stations, batteries and mounts already in the building can stay. Whether a pistol grip for an RFID build offers an RFID trigger is not documented and belongs on the list of questions for the distributor.

One argument for the TC201 platform gets lost in a datasheet comparison: the accessories are largely backward compatible with the TC22 and the TC27 per manufacturer statements. Anyone who already has charging stations, batteries and mounts of those lines in the building does not have to replace them. In a single branch with two devices that is a detail; across ten locations it is a four-figure sum.

What is offered, on the statements available, is single-slot and multi-slot charging stations, plain battery chargers, a pistol grip, an arm mount, a holster and a vehicle mount. Whether the pistol grip provides an RFID trigger on an RFID build is not documented — that too belongs on the list of points to settle before you buy.

What you realistically need

  • One charging station per device, wired in at a place where the device ends up automatically after closing time.
  • A second battery, if you run longer sessions in one go or serve several locations with one device. The 5,200 mAh option is the better starting point where the device is in use all day.
  • A hand strap or a holster, so that a 245 gram device is not put down between two rails and forgotten.
  • A screen protector, if the device is also used in the stockroom. IP65 and IP68 protect against dust and water, not against a scratch from a carton knife.

Software tools

On the software side Zebra ships the usual toolbox for its mobile computers: DataWedge for passing scans to any application without programming, StageNow for first setup by barcode, Enterprise Home Screen for a locked-down device image, and LifeGuard for security updates beyond standard Android maintenance. For RFID there are the Zebra RFID SDKs and 123RFID Desktop; whether and in what form these support the TC201 is not documented. Anyone connecting their own application should have SDK support confirmed for the concrete SKU.

For running a shop that is rarely the relevant level anyway. The handheld is only the sensor. The benefit arises in the software that holds the target stock against what was read, shows the differences and returns the result to your till system — in smaller businesses almost always as CSV or Excel. The honest answer

If you need a stocktaking solution in 2026, you buy the TC22R at around 1,295 euro net, or a TC22 with an RFD40 sled from around 839 euro net if mobile computers are in the building anyway. Both are obtainable, both are documented, and both have the range that makes a count finish in the time you planned. The TC201 with RFID goes on the watch list for 2027.

Our honest recommendation

If you need a stocktaking solution in 2026, you buy the TC22R, or the combination of a TC22 and an RFD40 sled. The TC22R is the simpler arrangement: one device, one battery, one charging cradle, no adapter matching. At around 1,295 euro net it costs roughly twice a TC201 in its base configuration, and in exchange it delivers the range and the 1,300 tags per second with which a count finishes in the time you planned for.

The sled route pays off if mobile computers are in the building anyway, or if several locations are to share one RFID module. You pay for the two-component logic with two batteries, two charging routes and roughly 780 grams in total, and you save the second computing unit. Details are on the page for the Zebra RFD40.

And the TC201? It is the right purchase if you need a modern barcode handheld that lasts, that weighs little and that fits your existing TC22 accessories. It is a candidate for 2027, once the RFID build is genuinely available in Europe and a datasheet with dependable figures exists. It is not a stocktaking solution today. Anyone who needs both — a light everyday device and a fast count — is in doubt better served by a TC201 plus a shared RFD40 sled than by a TC201 with near-field RFID. Whether the RFD40 docks to a TC201 is not confirmed, though: in the RFD40 documents Zebra names the TC21 and the TC26 as well as the EC50 and the EC55, and “current and future Zebra mobile computers” through eConnex adapters. Have that checked with the distributor before you buy.

If you would rather wait for the TC201

Waiting is a legitimate decision, and it can be organised so that it costs you nothing. Start the part of the project that does not depend on the reader: choose and order the labels, set up the printer, tag the incoming goods from the next delivery onwards, and get the interface to your till system working with a borrowed or rented handheld. Tagging the legacy stock is the long pole in any case, roughly two working days for two people at 4,000 pieces, and it is device independent.

Then set a date, not a feeling. Look again at the end of the first quarter of 2027, and check three things: whether a Zebra spec sheet for the RFID build exists, whether it states the EU band and the transmit power, and whether an EU SKU is actually in stock at a distributor rather than merely listed. If all three hold, compare the device against the TC22R on the numbers you then have. If any of them does not, wait another quarter or buy the device that is available. What you should not do is hold a stocktaking project open indefinitely for a build with no binding date.

The devices with roughly a metre of range

The EM45 RFID in a smartphone format sits in the same near-field class at up to 1.2 metres, and even lower on the read rate at 20 tags per second. As a device for single-article checking, price marking and spot checks it has its place; for a full stocktake it does not. The DS9908R belongs to a different task again: roughly 45.7 centimetres of range, deliberately short, so that the next customer’s goods are not read in as well at the till.

Outside the Zebra portfolio

The Chainway C72 at 942 euro net and the Chainway C5 at 992 euro net are integrated handhelds with a pistol grip and manufacturer ranges far above anything discussed here. Read those figures with care: they are open-field values measured with large anti-metal tags, and the ratio between a catalogue figure and what happens in a shop is roughly the same whichever manufacturer states it. The Chainway R6 at 659 euro net takes another route again and clamps a phone you already own into a sled. What speaks for these devices is the price; what speaks against them is set out on their own pages rather than summarised here.

The MEFERI ME87 is worth watching for the same reason as the TC201: its UHF engine sits in the processor rather than in an add-on module, and at roughly 2 metres of range it shows what that architecture currently manages. For Europe there is neither a visible distribution channel nor a published price. Watch it, do not buy it — the same sentence that applies to the RFID build of the TC201 today.

Our recommendation in one line

In one line: if you are buying this year for a stocktake, buy the TC22R, or an RFD40 sled if suitable mobile computers are already in the building. Buy the TC201 today only as a barcode handheld. Put the RFID build on the watch list for 2027 and revisit it when a Zebra datasheet with an EU band, a transmit power and a range exists. An overview of every device is in the hardware section.

Law and radio

Radio approval: what applies in Europe

The legal frame

UHF RFID in Europe runs in the 865 to 868 MHz band, harmonised across the EU and the EEA through CEPT recommendation ERC/REC 70-03 and the harmonised standard ETSI EN 302 208, which permits up to 2 W ERP. No individual licence, no registration and no spectrum fee is required. For the TC201 there is one open point that does not arise with other devices in this section: as long as no datasheet states the EU band and the transmit power of the RFID build, its European radio conformity cannot be checked publicly.

The European frame

UHF RFID readers in Europe operate in the band from 865 to 868 MHz. That band is harmonised across the European Union and the European Economic Area through CEPT recommendation ERC/REC 70-03 on short range devices, and the technical basis is the harmonised standard ETSI EN 302 208 in its version V3.4.1 of December 2023, which permits up to 2 watt ERP for interrogators in this band. A further band from 915 to 921 MHz with up to 4 watt ERP is available in addition; which parts of it are released nationally differs between member states.

Because the band is harmonised, the same device is lawful in every EU and EEA country. What differs is the national regulator that administers the general authorisation: the Bundesnetzagentur in Germany, ARCEP in France, UKE in Poland, RDI in the Netherlands, and so on for the other member states. The list is longer than that and there is no point reproducing it here; the point is that the frame is common and only the administering authority changes.

For normal operation within that general authorisation, no individual licence and no registration is needed, and no spectrum fee is payable. You buy the device, you switch it on, and you keep the conformity papers. Responsibility for operating within the frame sits with the operator, that is with your business, rather than with the dealer.

The United Kingdom sits outside this. Since leaving the EU it applies its own rules, with Ofcom Interface Requirement IR 2030 for licence-exempt short range devices and UKCA marking in place of CE; if you are buying for a UK site, check the current position with your supplier rather than relying on the European frame described here.

A frequent misunderstanding concerns the comparison with the United States, where 4 watt EIRP applies. Because ERP and EIRP differ by 2.15 dB, 2 watt ERP corresponds to roughly 3.3 watt EIRP. The American limit is therefore only about 20 per cent above the European one, not double, as is occasionally written. That conversion is our own.

What CE means and what it does not

The CE marking is the manufacturer’s declaration, or that of the responsible economic operator, that the device meets the applicable EU rules, in the case of radio devices above all the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU. It is not an official test and not a quality seal. The accompanying paper is the EU declaration of conformity, and it lists the standards applied. If ETSI EN 302 208 stands there, the UHF function has been assessed against the European standard. If it does not, it has not.

Where the TC201 has its open point

This is where this page differs from the others in this section. As long as no datasheet states the EU band and the transmit power of the RFID build, the European radio conformity of the RFID function cannot be checked publicly. That is no accusation against Zebra — a device not yet shipping in Europe needs no published documentation yet, and the barcode builds are unaffected by any of this. It means only this: before you order, have the EU SKU, the frequency band, the transmit power in ERP and the declaration of conformity given to you in writing. On the barcode builds without RFID the question does not arise at all.

Builds for other regions

Devices sold for other regions are hardware variants, not settings. A UHF device built for North America transmits in the band from 902 to 928 MHz, which is allocated differently in Europe. Such a device may not be operated here, regardless of the fact that it looks identical, runs the same software and may appear cheaper in an online shop. Order the EU build explicitly and have it confirmed in the order confirmation. With Zebra the region code sits at the end of the article number: -E8 and -WR for Europe and for the worldwide build, -US and -FT for the United States and Canada. This deserves particular care on marketplace listings and with grey imports, where stock built for North America is regularly sold with no note at all.

Frequently asked questions about the Zebra TC201

Is the Zebra TC201 available with integrated RFID?

Per distributor sources, UHF RFID is an option on selected SKUs of the TC201 rather than a standard feature. No official Zebra spec sheet carrying RFID figures for the TC201 was retrievable on 26.08.2026. The figures in circulation, roughly 1.2 m of range and 200+ tags per second, are a distributor figure and nothing more. Anyone ordering today should have the RFID build, its EU bands and its transmit power confirmed in writing.

When does the RFID build of the TC201 reach Europe?

On the evidence available to us the RFID build is announced for Europe only for the end of 2026. Neither Zebra publicly nor the trade names a binding date. For a stocktaking project meant to be finished in 2026 the device is therefore not plannable: it is announced, not available. Realistically the TC201 with RFID is a candidate for 2027.

How far does the Zebra TC201 read RFID labels?

The trade states roughly 1.2 metres. That number is not covered by any official Zebra datasheet, and like every range statement it is an open-field value measured without goods, metal or people in the way. In a densely hung rail markedly less of it survives. For comparison: the RFD40 sled sits at roughly 6 metres nominal, and the TC22R at 12.2 to 24.4 metres depending on which Zebra datasheet you read.

Was there ever a Zebra TC21 with integrated RFID?

No. That confusion is widespread in the market. The TC21 and the TC26 could do UHF RFID only through a clipped-on sled, usually the RFD40. The last Zebra handheld of this class with a genuinely built-in UHF reader was the TC20 RFID on Android 7.0, long discontinued. Anyone looking for an entry-level device with RFID inside the housing today ends up at the TC22R.

What does the Zebra TC201 cost?

AutoID Warehouse lists the TC201 at 648.83 to 881.34 euro net depending on configuration, as at 08/2026, so roughly 649 to 881 euro. The span covers memory, scan engine, battery and mobile network. No surcharge for the RFID build is shown there and none is known to us. All prices are net, excluding VAT; EU business buyers with a valid VAT identification number are invoiced under the reverse-charge procedure. A charging cradle, a spare battery, labels and software come on top in any case.

Does the TC201 replace the TC22 and the TC27?

Yes. Zebra positions the TC201 platform as the successor that brings the TC22 and the TC27 together into one line. The Wi-Fi build takes the role of the TC22, the 5G build that of the TC27. A large part of the accessories for the TC22 and the TC27 remains usable per manufacturer statements. For a business with TC22 charging stations already installed, that lowers the cost of moving over.

Is the TC201 enough for a stocktake in a fashion shop?

For a full stocktake, rather not. The read rate is not the problem; the range is. At roughly 1.2 metres you have to walk up to every single piece instead of sweeping a rail from the aisle. On our own projection that stretches a count in a 120 square metre shop from a good hour to two or three. For finding a single article, for goods-in and for spot checks it is perfectly usable.

Which Zebra device fits an RFID stocktake today?

Anyone who has to procure in 2026 takes the TC22R as a one-device solution, or a TC22 with an RFD40 sled if mobile computers are in the building anyway. Both deliver up to 1,300 tags per second and a range that lets you capture a rail in passing. Put the TC201 with RFID on the watch list for 2027, once the build ships in Europe and a datasheet with dependable figures exists.
