Bluebird RFR900: the cheaper of the two sleds

900 tags a second, a nominal six metres, the European band documented on the manufacturer's own page — technically the RFR900 is solid mid-range and more than enough for a stocktake in a fashion shop. What stands out is the state of the sources: on four figures the manufacturer page and the specialist dealers disagree. This page gives both values and says which of them makes a difference on a shop floor.

What the RFR900 is

Short answer

A bare UHF RFID reader with a pistol grip that clips onto a Bluebird mobile computer you already own. No display, no barcode scanner, no software of its own — all of that comes from the host. For a business already running Bluebird devices it is the cheap route into RFID; for a fresh start it is half a solution.

Unlike the newer RFR901, the RFR900 has no universal mount for ordinary smartphones. Dealer listings carry a separate sled variant for each compatible Bluebird model — EF400, EF401, EF500, EF500R, EF501, EF501R, EF550, EF550R and HF550X — identifiable by the part number suffix. That is the single most important point when ordering: an RFR900 does not fit generically, it fits a particular host.

Short answer

TSC Auto ID Technology acquired 96.51 per cent of the shares in Bluebird Inc. Announced on 31 July 2024, completed on 24 November 2024, purchase price KRW 120 bn. Bluebird stays operationally independent according to the joint statement and keeps its brand name.

In practice that means anyone running the TSC RFID printers can source printer and reader from the same corporate group: one contact, one supply route, one service channel. When something breaks that is worth more than a small price difference, because arguments about responsibility between two manufacturers cost time.

Short answer

900+ tags a second and a nominal 20+ ft or 6+ metres. For Europe the manufacturer page gives 865 to 868 MHz. It states no transmit power in dBm — unlike the RFR901 datasheet, which gives it for every band.

To put the read rate in perspective: 900 tags a second means 4,000 pieces would be read in a little over four seconds on paper. In a shop the read rate is never the bottleneck; the time goes on walking the floor, on stacked goods and on high shelves. Range is what decides — and the nominal six metres is an open-field figure with no measuring condition stated. Between textiles and metal fixtures we work with two to five metres. That is our estimate, not a manufacturer figure.

Four figures the sources disagree on

Short answer

Sealing, battery capacity, weight and encoder are given differently by the manufacturer page and by two specialist dealers. Three of the four make no difference in daily shop use. One does: between IP42 and IP54 lies the difference between drip protection and splash protection.

On the encoder two things argue for the dealers. First, the TSC page for the RFR901 carries word-for-word the same text, which points to generic boilerplate. Second, Impinj has formally discontinued the R2000 and R500 reader chips. Even so we do not assert that the RFR900 contains an E710 — we give both statements and their sources.

A fifth point is an editing slip rather than a contradiction: the TSC product page lists a 5.5-inch display at 1440 × 720 in the same specification table. A sled has no display. The page evidently mixes host figures into those of the clip-on device, so we do not carry the value.

The other half

Without a host the sled counts nothing

Short answer

The RFR900 costs between 1,181.01 and 1,239.15 euro net. That is the sled. On top comes the Bluebird mobile computer it clips onto — and for that we found no European price with a stated tax basis. Only the total is comparable with an integrated handheld.

That is the decisive difference from a device such as the Zebra TC22R, which brings everything in one housing for around 1,295 euro net. A sled pays off when the host is already there or is needed anyway — because goods receiving books on the same mobile computer, for instance. Anyone starting from nothing and only wanting to count pays twice and manages two batteries and two cradles.

Short answer

Dealer prices are snapshots; project prices are frequently lower. All euro figures are net, excluding VAT, and business buyers in another EU member state with a valid VAT identification number are invoiced under the reverse-charge procedure. Worth noting: the top of the RFR900 range reaches the price of the stronger RFR901 — if you end up at the upper end, quote the RFR901 as well.

What comes on top of the sled

  • The host. The sled does not fit generically but matches a particular Bluebird model. The part number has to match the host.
  • Labels. The largest recurring item. Passive UHF labels cost roughly 12 to 15 cents each in the small quantities a fashion shop buys; for 4,000 existing pieces that is 480 to 600 euro once, plus new stock.
  • Charging and a spare battery. Doubled with a sled, because the sled and the host each have their own.
  • Software. Without stock control an RFID reader is a device that displays numbers. Matching number to article and handing the result to the till is the software's job.

The RFR900 is not a poor device — it is a device with a thinner file than its successor. Anyone buying it should get the sealing, the encoder and the operating temperature in writing from the dealer. Anyone unwilling to go to that trouble, and landing at the upper end of the price range anyway, should take the RFR901, whose datasheet carries all four.

RFR900 against the RFD40. Both are sleds and both need a host. The Zebra sled is markedly cheaper in its base configuration and reads faster, but wants a Zebra handheld and the matching eConnex adapter. The Bluebird is the obvious choice when Bluebird mobile computers are already in use.

Short answer

Across Europe UHF RFID runs under ETSI EN 302 208 in the band 865 to 868 MHz at up to 2 W ERP. For the RFR900 the manufacturer page names exactly that band as the European variant. Devices built for 902 to 928 MHz may not be operated in the European Union — the regional variant sits in the part number suffix.

The framework is set within CEPT recommendation ERC/REC 70-03, which the member administrations implement nationally — the Bundesnetzagentur in Germany, ARCEP in France, UKE in Poland, RDI in the Netherlands. In most member states this takes the form of a general authorisation: no licence application and no device registration, provided the equipment meets the standard, carries CE marking and comes with an EU declaration of conformity. Ask for both before you buy and keep them with the device papers — on this device, together with the written confirmation of the sealing.

The United Kingdom has sat outside this framework since leaving the European Union; there Ofcom interface requirement IR 2030 and UKCA marking apply. If you import from outside the European Union yourself, Article 4 of Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 makes you the responsible economic operator, with the national registration duties for electrical equipment, batteries and packaging that go with it.

Common questions about the Bluebird RFR900

What is the difference between the RFR900 and the RFR901?

The RFR901 is the stronger build: 1,300+ instead of 900+ tags a second, a nominal 10+ instead of 6+ metres, 4,900 instead of 3,400 mAh, optional wireless charging and a universal mount for ordinary smartphones. The RFR900 is lighter and cheaper in return. TSC carries both in parallel; we found no discontinuation notice for the RFR900. The detail is on our RFR901 page.

What does the Bluebird RFR900 cost?

The distributor Jarltech lists 1,181.01 to 1,239.15 euro net depending on the variant; the page states expressly that prices are in euros and exclusive of VAT. That is the price of the sled alone. A host comes on top, because the RFR900 has neither a display nor software of its own.

Which frequency band does the RFR900 use in Europe?

865 to 868 MHz. Is the RFR900 IP54 or IP42?

Both appear in the sources. The TSC EMEA product page says IP54, two specialist dealers say IP42. The difference is not academic in a shop: IP42 protects against vertically falling drops, IP54 against splashing water from any direction and against dust as well. If the device will also be used in goods receiving or the stockroom, have the sealing confirmed in writing.
