Bluebird RFR901: the sled with the most open datasheet
1,300 tags a second, a nominal ten metres and an Impinj E710 — on paper the RFR901 sits in the premium class. What stands out is something else: it is the only device in this section whose datasheet names both European UHF bands with their transmit power. This page gives the figures with a source, explains the contradiction over the encoder, and works out why 1,239.15 euro net is not the price of the solution.

What the RFR901 is, and what it is not
A bare RFID reader with a pistol grip that clips onto a device you already have: a Bluebird mobile computer or, through the universal mount, an ordinary smartphone. It has no display and no barcode scanner. That makes it cheap when the host is already there — and a two-part solution when it is not.
The TSC product page is unusually clear on this point: the RFR901 has no display and no barcode function, it is purely an RFID reader. That is not a weakness but the form factor. A sled carries the battery, the antenna and the radio module; everything to do with displaying, booking and transmitting is done by the device it sits on.
For a shop that means the RFR901 is the right choice if you already own devices it fits — the Bluebird EF series, the VX500, the HF550X — or if you deliberately want to use a work phone as the screen. Anyone starting from nothing should work out the total and hold it against an integrated handheld such as the Zebra TC22R.
Bluebird has belonged to TSC since 2024
TSC Auto ID Technology acquired 96.51 per cent of the shares in Bluebird Inc. Announced on 31 July 2024, completed on 24 November 2024. Bluebird stays operationally independent according to the joint statement and keeps its brand name — which is why you find the devices both as Bluebird and as TSC Bluebird.
For procurement that is a practical point rather than a footnote. Anyone running the TSC RFID printers can source the readers from the same corporate group: one contact, one supply route, one service channel. When something breaks, that is usually worth more than a hundred euros of price difference, because arguments about who is responsible cost time.
The statement expressly promises Bluebird “independent operations” and installs Jinoh Kim as CEO. On the European TSC website the Bluebird devices have product pages of their own; the press release for the newest model went out from Haar near Munich and describes Bluebird as “a member of the TSC Auto ID Group”.
RFID performance: range, read rate, chip
1,300+ tags a second and a nominal 10+ metres, read by an Impinj E710. That is the same chip as in the Chainway C72 and C5 and the same performance class as the Zebra RFD40. The range figure is a nominal value with no measuring condition stated — on a shop floor we work with considerably less.
The contradiction over the encoder, and how we settle it
The Bluebird datasheet and Impinj's own partner page both name the Impinj E710. The TSC EMEA product page instead says “Impinj R2000 or R500”. Two things argue for following the datasheet. First, the TSC page for the older RFR900 carries word-for-word the same text, which points to a generic boilerplate block. Second, Impinj has formally discontinued the R2000 and R500 reader chips — a device launched in 2024 is unlikely to be built around them. We name the E710 and put the TSC statement beside it, rather than quietly dropping one of the two.
What the range figure is worth
“32.8+ ft / 10+ m” appears in the datasheet with no tag type and no measuring environment. That is industry practice and still unsatisfying. Open-field figures against a favourably aligned reference label have little to do with a clothes rail between metal fixtures: textiles absorb, metal reflects, stacked goods shadow one another. For devices of this class, two to five metres is what matters in practice. That is our estimate, not a manufacturer figure — why it works that way is set out on our page about antennas and range.
Two European bands in the datasheet
The datasheet lists 865 to 868 MHz at 0 to 30 dBm for Europe and, in addition, 915 to 921 MHz at 0 to 30 dBm. The second line is not a misprint: ETSI EN 302 208 V3.4.1 defines an upper band at 915 to 921 MHz alongside the classic lower one. The RFR901 is the only device in this section whose datasheet states both.

Transmit power is given in dBm, while the European limit in ETSI EN 302 208 is expressed in ERP: 2 W ERP in the lower band, 4 W ERP in the upper one. The two cannot be converted into one another without assumptions about antenna gain, so we do not convert them here.
Why it matters: most datasheets either give no frequency at all or a catch-all such as “860 to 960 MHz, region dependent”. Neither helps a buyer. A datasheet that lists the regional variants individually with band and power is what makes it possible to check the European build in the first place — and makes it harder to order a device for the North American market by accident.
The host is the other half of the sum
The sled costs 1,239.15 euro net. On top comes the device it sits on: a Bluebird mobile computer of the EF series, a VX500, an HF550X — or a smartphone in the universal mount. Only the total is comparable with an integrated handheld.
The datasheet names the Bluebird EF series, the VX500 and the HF550X as hosts, together with the forthcoming S20, S50 and S70. Through the universal mount the RFR901 also takes ordinary smartphones, paired over Bluetooth 5.0 or 5.3.
The smartphone route is tempting and carries the same catch as on the Chainway R6: the phone decides what the solution can take. An office phone with no ingress rating, in a stockroom where things get dropped, is the weakest link in the chain — and if it is a private phone, stock control suddenly belongs to the things that leave the building at the end of the shift.
To compare with the Zebra TC22R (around 1,295 euro net as an integrated device) you have to add the Bluebird sled and a host. We carry no price for the Bluebird mobile computers because we could not document one with a stated tax basis — ask the distributor for it before you compare.

Price and running costs
1,239.15 euro net from the distributor Jarltech, expressly exclusive of VAT. That is the sled alone. On top come the host, a charging solution, possibly a spare battery, and in every case the labels — the largest recurring item.

What comes on top of the sled
- The host. Without a screen and software the sled counts nothing. Either a Bluebird mobile computer or a smartphone in the universal mount.
- Labels. The largest recurring item. Passive UHF labels cost roughly 12 to 15 cents each in the small quantities a fashion shop buys; for 4,000 existing pieces that is 480 to 600 euro once, plus new stock.
- Charging and a spare battery. Doubled with a sled, because the sled and the host each have their own. The 4,900 mAh pack is hot-swappable, which makes a spare a sensible line item.
- Software. Without stock control an RFID reader is a device that displays numbers. Matching number to article and handing the result to the till is the software's job.

The most serious point is none of the technical ones but the two-part nature. A sled is exactly the right decision when the host is already there or is needed anyway. Anyone who buys one device for the stocktake and a second one so the first can be used ends up with two batteries, two cradles and two devices to manage — for a single shop that is more work than the saving is worth.

The nominal ranges are manufacturer figures measured under their own conditions and are not directly comparable with one another. RFR901 against the RFD40. Both are sleds and both read 1,300+ tags a second. The Zebra sled is markedly cheaper but wants a Zebra handheld as its host and the matching eConnex adapter. The Bluebird also takes a phone through the universal mount. If you already run Zebra, take Zebra; if you are starting from nothing and want to use a phone, the RFR901 is the more flexible route.
RFR901 against an integrated handheld. For a single shop with nothing in place, the integrated device is the simpler answer: one device, one battery, one cradle. The sled pays off when you need the host anyway — because goods receiving books on the same mobile computer, for instance.
Radio approval in Europe
Across Europe UHF RFID runs under ETSI EN 302 208 in the band 865 to 868 MHz at up to 2 W ERP, with an upper band at 915 to 921 MHz at up to 4 W ERP. The RFR901 names both in its datasheet. Devices built for 902 to 928 MHz may not be operated in the European Union — the regional variant sits in the part number suffix.
The framework is set within CEPT recommendation ERC/REC 70-03, which the member administrations implement nationally — the Bundesnetzagentur in Germany, ARCEP in France, UKE in Poland, RDI in the Netherlands. In most member states this takes the form of a general authorisation: no licence application and no device registration, provided the equipment meets the standard, carries CE marking and comes with an EU declaration of conformity. Ask for both before you buy and keep them with the device papers.
The United Kingdom has sat outside this framework since leaving the European Union; there Ofcom interface requirement IR 2030 and UKCA marking apply. If you import from outside the European Union yourself, Article 4 of Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 makes you the responsible economic operator, with the national registration duties for electrical equipment, batteries and packaging that go with it.

Is the RFR901 enough for a stocktake in a fashion shop?
On performance, comfortably. 1,300 tags a second and a nominal ten metres put it in the premium class. The question is not performance but form factor: a sled means two devices, two batteries and two cradles. If you own nothing yet, an integrated handheld is simpler. If you already run Bluebird mobile computers, or want to use a work phone as the screen, the sled is the cheaper route.
What is the difference between the RFR900 and the RFR901?
The RFR901 is the stronger device: 1,300+ instead of 900+ tags a second, a nominal 10+ instead of 6+ metres, a 4,900 instead of a 3,400 mAh battery, optional wireless charging and a universal mount that also takes ordinary smartphones. Can I clip the RFR901 onto my own phone?
Yes. Alongside the Bluebird EF series, the VX500 and the HF550X, the datasheet expressly names consumer smartphones via the universal mount, paired over Bluetooth 5.0 or 5.3. That is the same approach as the Chainway R6, one class up. Bear in mind what it implies: the phone then becomes the weak point of the solution — drop resistance and battery life follow the phone, not the sled.
Can the RFR901 be operated legally in the European Union?
The groundwork is documented: the datasheet names the European bands with their transmit power, and the device is sold through European distributors. That is a better starting point than many a direct import. Even so, ask for written confirmation that the build offered is the European one, and ask for the EU declaration of conformity — with this manufacturer the regional variant sits in the part number suffix, and a device built for 902 to 928 MHz may not be operated in the European Union.
